Gun/Rifle vice and stand
I am looking for design ideas to build myself another rifle vice/stand. I made my current one from beech a few years ago and designed it to clamp into a normal bench vice, it works OK however it does not really suit all rifles so I want to make something new, has anyone built one or have any suggestions?
Yes I can probably buy one for under GBP25 however it is always nice to build such things.
I use the stand for everything from cleaning rifles to bedding jobs.

Re: Gun/Rifle vice and stand
Please keep us up if you do anything. I am thinking about one for changing barrels/calibres. Thx
Re: Gun/Rifle vice and stand
I found out last month that a Tipton gun vice WILL fit inside a large suitcase, so I'm afraid my creative thoughts have turned to other fields. smile2

I'd be interested in any designs too as I fancy making one. I thought of using one of those profile gauges for tile cutting to get a snug profile around the stock. Has to be more satisfying than just buying one.

Re: Gun/Rifle vice and stand
This is what I currently use, what you cannot see is the block on the underside which allows me to clamp the stand into a vice. This is the system I use for cleaning and bedding rifles. Basically some offcuts of beech kitchen work surface with some bits of carpet glued into the ends to protect the stock. The whole thing is screwed and glued with a self foaming type glue so it should never come apart.
If I am doing something slightly different I have a vice that I drop two carpet faced pieces of wood into to act as soft jaws and then have a separate outrigger on the bench to either support the front or rear of the stock. I cover the bench with a cheap fluffy bathroom mat to protect the stock if I am at the bench and make sure it is scrupulously clean and free of anything that might mark the stock.
All rather Heath-Robinson at present so I need to build something more robust
