AWESOME AUSSIE AUG

Light, compact, mission-adaptable! ADF’s new high-tech F90 Austeyr is everything but austere!

The F90 Austeyr is a nicely improved service rifle, combining a modular 5.56 mm rifle platform with grenade launcher. Future systems will see complete integration, offering warfighters a wide variety of external electronic devices

Military contractor Thales Australia officially unveiled the new F90 issue rifle for the Australian Defence Force (ADF). In addition to more accessory rails, the F90 is nearly a pound lighter than the F88S-A2 it is intended to replace (F89 is the designation of the ADF’s FN Minimi variant) and the large AUG triggerguard has been reshaped to serve as a vertical foregrip. Steyr-Mannlicher is rumored to be partnering with Thales to pursue possible replacement of the French FAMAS rifle as well.

The AUG (Armee Universal Gewehr or universal army rifle) started as a 5.56mm bullpup assault rifle designed in the early 1970s by Steyr that was later adopted by the Austrian Army as the StG 77 (Sturmgewehr 77) in 1977. In the late 1980s the ADF adopted a modified version, dubbed the F88 Austeyr, as a replacement for the then-issued L1A1 SLR and M16A1 rifles and manufactured under contract by Australian Defence Industries (now Thales Australia).

Designed in the 1970’s, Steyr’s AUG is still serving military, law enforcement and security forces in over 30 countries

Changes for the F88 Austeyr included a bayonet lug, 1:7 twist to stabilize 62-grain NATO SS109 ammunition and an automatic lockout selector that can disable the full-auto position of the two-stage trigger system, as used on the original AUG. This was upgraded to the F88S-A1, which added a Picatinny rail in place of the Steyr AUG standard 1.bowl optical sight, that allows a variety of other optics, lasers and/or night sights. The F88S-A2 featured a modified gas system to increase reliability with other NATO-manufactured SS109 ammunition, specifically U.S.-made M855, an enlarged ejection port, longer rail on top and side rails for mounting lights.

From what I can find out the F90 is a planned export model of the EF-88 (Enhanced F-88). The blog writer is getting ahead of himself as the final testing of the EF-88 should conclude in the middle of this year! If I'm right the EF-88, if accepted, should be known as the F-88A3 or possibly F-88SA3.

No mention of the safety, but it seems at least they're going to fix the cocking handle!

I wonder what the not so big British Army will upgrade to?.....I know one thing though....it wont be made here **** German/Swiss or Austrian would be excellent (Though unlikely because of cost) US....not too bad and then there is 50 year old Russian Surplus (All we can afford :bad: Could always get the new AK 12 series the Russian Army are getting....boost relations and trade ;) )

Don't hold your breath on the AK-12 http://en.rian.ru/military_news/20121123/177693290.html
The latest version of Russia's world-famous Kalashnikov assault rifle, the AK-12, has shown up a range of problems during initial testing, the head of the weapons-making agency responsible for trials of the new gun said on Friday.
And apparently last year the Deputy Defense Minister said no to the AK-12 because of the millions of AK-74's they have in stock!

The AN-94 is by most accounts a far better weapon and was supposed to replace the AK-74 but is more expensive to produce and as such is only in limited issue.

Well at this rate the Army wont exist in 10 years anyway...especially since the Police are getting newer kit every flippin year :o Since when does Birmigham Airport need a collection of FN P90's? and the MOD Police HK MP7's????

Next thing you know there will be a call for all FAC holder to donate their firearms to the army.... :cool2:

Small and unobtrusive with a round that limits over penetration.

When the bean counters got involved and took their SA80's off them and replaced them with G36's at the same time as replacing their Brownings with Glocks, some bright spark thought it was a much better idea to replace two weapons with one..... Yep, seen that before.

Non of the MoD lads I've spoken with have a kind word about their MP7's. And those deployed to Afghanistan...... took G36's and Glocks.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?
