For subsonic I don't think you'd need to mess around with gas checks , just get a nice 250-300 g round nose and stuff it on top of a charge of trailboss ?

Theoretically you shouldn't need gas checks for sub sonic loads however each boolit and rifle are a law unto them selves and some gas check shanked boolits won't shoot a damn without a check at any velocity, you just have to test and try.

Most of us indoor 303 shooters use a 115 gn GC soupcan boolit over 4 gns of VV N310 to good effect without checks, however my No 4 T won't shoot that boolit worth a damn without a gas check fitted, put a gas check on it and its a tack driver.

Hmmm, those boolits recommended by Dromia seem pretty good. We'll have to look round and see who sells .338 Federal barrels now, and in what twists...

You'll be looking 338 barrel blanks and most likely have to add the cost of a 338 federal reamer on top.

Walther does 338 blanks with a 1 in 10 twist. Trueflite 1 in9 and 1in 10. I would hazard a guess and say 1 in 10 would suit most bullets/boolits and be the most common twist rate available.

Well, what length is the bullet/boolit you're thinking of using? Is the one Adam suggested?

Going by the boolit specs - a 1 in 10 twist rate is plenty.
