Re: Ruger No1
Old fashioned rimmed cartridges just seem right in a falling block. .22 Hornet, .30-30, maybe even .303 British? I think the .218 Bee, .219 Donaldson Wasp, .2somethingsomething Zipper sort of cartridges are rimmed if you fancied something a bit different too. Hornet is cheap and cute.

Re: Ruger No1
Hornet is on the list as is the Bee but unfortunately, I have to agree with Sim in that the only rifle I've seen in .218 Bee is a bit over priced - not to mention trying to source brass. sign01
Then again, I've seen some nice 222's...

Re: Ruger No1
Sandgroper, what is the rifle going to be used for? Hunting or punching holes in paper or both? Like I said previously I have owned a 22-250 for many years and have found it to be a good all round cartridge for both hunting critters and paper punching.

Blu,
How would you rate the .22-250 versus 5.56/.223?

Fair enough, well paper punching out to any fair distance for instance, one important factor to take into consideration is the barrel twist. Remington 22-250 for example as is most factory rifles these days has a 1:14 twist so you have a choice of bullets up to 55 grns, anything heavier and you'll have a pretty hard time stabilizing bullets. Saying that though I've sat all day long popping off ground hogs at 300 - 600 yards using 50 grn Nosler Ballistic tips.Sandgroper wrote:50/50 Paper punching/Pest control.Blu wrote:Sandgroper, what is the rifle going to be used for? So what I'd say is research the barrel twists of the different small calibres first before you buy anything so as not to be disappointed later.

In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

I've done some research on the twist rates and to be honest 55 grain bullets will be fine for what I want anything heavier is a bonus. Basically, 600m on the range, 300m for vermin.Blu wrote:Fair enough, well paper punching out to any fair distance for instance, one important factor to take into consideration is the barrel twist.
