Re: Musings on the sound of a bullet
At the start of private Ryan the bullets made "zip" noises ... At a range that they would have most definitely been supersonic .... A "crack" would have been far more realistic. !
Re: Musings on the sound of a bullet
The crack would have been the noise my ass cheeks were making.....

Hats off to anyone who has heard them fired at them in anger !!
I've been in a situation where they were fired at someone else in anger and came far far to close to
me in the process ... Not fun !

Re: Musings on the sound of a bullet
What i find most intresting is the sound of subsonic blackpowder rounds passing overhead in the butts at Kingsbury. a 577 minie bullet sounds like a angry swarm of bees flying overhead. The Martini henry sounds like that as well. The butts crew had never experianced these calibres before and they were causing some concern on the radio as they were blasting "massive holes" in the target board.
A old friend of mine from a airborne regiment who had seen it all once told me the worst sound you can ever hear is crack CRACK... THUMP

Re: Musings on the sound of a bullet
I suppose hearing crack and thump is better than not hearing anything at all as a supersonic round hits you !!

Oddly they do on camera!meles meles wrote:"Silenced" guns don't go "phut" either...
Probably just because the camera can't pick up the supersonic crack as the bullet goes down range

Re: Musings on the sound of a bullet
Those mythbusters chappies tested sound modded pistol and the sound used in the movies was pretty damn spot on.
Re: Musings on the sound of a bullet
