M14 EBR Straight Pull - Scope

#1 Post by HALODIN »

I'm really struggling with finding a nice looking military style scope for my M14. If I was going to keep it in the wooden stock, I would definitely buy a 3x9 Leatherwood ART II, but because the cam mechanism is dependent on a specific mount, it's not really an option on the EBR chassis. My biggest complaint with the scopes I've looked at, are either the turrets stand too proud and/or most scopes don't seem to have that military finish. If I could find something that looked like the ART II I'd be all over it. Price is always a consideration and I can't bring myself to spend more than £800 on a scope, although if the right one came up I would. I will shoot this rifle at 100 yards 99% of the time.

Can anyone suggest a nice scope to fill the space between the rings please?

Cheers,

Craig.

How about a Vortex you could pick up a Viper PST or HS within your budget if you didnt want to stretch to an S&B then you would have this sort of look..

Thanks for the reply and yes that is sort of the look I'm chasing, although I was thinking about something with a 40mm objective, otherwise it gives it that hunting scope look. Now I know I shouldn't overly concern myself with aesthetics, but I can't help it...

Looking for a scope unless you want to spend thousands, is bewildering. I'm still struggling to see the benefit of expensive scopes if you're only ever shooting at 100 yards. People say you get what you pay for with scopes, but I have to say, over a fixed range, I'm still not sure what that is.

all you ever need, at a price you can afford (if you can find any) the Simmons Whitetail Classic 1.5x5

£800 (new) does seem a limiting factor.

Most of the military type stuff I see starts at around £1200. :(

Our shooting companion Jamie, got a 'military style' scope from fleeBay for around 70 notes - it was surprisingly good. Out to 100 yards in normal conditions I'd say it'd do fine - don't know how well it'd handle higher recoil and lower light though.

I think I had 10x magnification in mind, plus that style scope on the M14 wouldn't look quite right IMO, but I'll keep it in mind for the next one!

I don't mind buying second hand, in fact I think I'd be happier, but the bigger problem is working out what the hell I want. I'd spend more on a scope, but it would have to be a thing of absolute beauty! A bit like the glowing suitcase in Pulp Fiction.

Hopefully low light should be OK for him, Adrian was saying a smaller objective should be fine unless you're out foxing at dusk, which kind of makes sense. Recoil well that's something else altogether. Although I've yet to see a reticle sitting loose at the bottom of the scope, you have said he's cursed...

What about this

It would get you pretty close and so far I have been pretty impressed with the Vortex glass I have seen and used.

Thanks. It's along the lines of what I want and the price is nice too. I guess I was looking for something closer to the ARTII above, it's got that certain look, but the more I look, the more certain it seems I can't find what I'm look for. The Viper will certainly be a contender if I turn up empty handed, thanks for the link.

T'wiki article actually lists the scope and mounts used on the service rifles:

You could Googleflop some of those and see what takes your fancy.
