NEVER heard of ANY "covering letter" - don't see how it would be legal as ALL SALES must be entered onto the FAC by lawSevenSixTwo wrote:Don't you get issued a covering letter in lieu, permitting you to buy ammunition while your FAC is in?
Just goes to show there's no consistency in what different forces do. And they want more money?...

Re: Full FAC?
Yes, but you do not commit an offence by failing to do so, you just create a condition by which the constable is entitled to seize your firearms and demand to know your name and address. A complete pain I know, but not a crime. The offence at S48(4) applies only if the constable demands a document issued in another member state of the EU from you and you fail to explain that you, being British, don't have such a foreign document.breacher wrote:You are required BY LAW to produce FAC to a constable requiring it when found in possession of firearms.
Re: Full FAC?
Again, there is no provision in law for a covering letter. A RFD is supposed to see your FAC when selling ammo.

Via is PR, which will take all of 30 seconds....
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Re: Full FAC?
Nope, but I bought enough ammo to last a month or two - tbh, I'm expecting a quick turnaround - there shouldn't be much for them to do.SevenSixTwo wrote:Don't you get issued a covering letter in lieu, permitting you to buy ammunition while your FAC is in?

I'm assuming all my purchase notifications are stored electronically, so it'll just be them clicking 'print' and popping the new one in the post ...maybe.
I've still got my SGC, maybe if I get pulled on the way to my club I could claim my .357 Taurus is actually an old English side-by-side.

Re: Full FAC?
It must have changed since my day - back then you could call the control room on your radio. They could then telephone the Firearms Licensing Dept. That was Mon - Fri 0900-1700. Outside of those hours, the advice was to either seize firearm/s and take them to station where the matter could be sorted out later or arrest, depending on the circumstances.Sim G wrote:breacher wrote:If they STILL refuse, ask them how a constable will verify your FAC from the roadside when you are found at 0500 on a Sunday off out for a stalk or at midnight when lamping ?

Are you saying that outside of office hours, when the relevant department is shut, that the local control room will be able to confirm FAC and what firearms it covers ?
Outside of all that, there are anti-gun types in all walks of life. And pedantic types. And those who abuse their power just because you have upset them ( maybe by knowing the firearms act more than they do ) - And sometimes they are a police officer !
And if you don't have your FAC there is NO requirement of them to use common sense and make a telephone call. The law only states they are entitled to demand production of the FAC. And if they do sieze or arrest, you CANNOT make a complaint as they are acting within the legislation.
The Police insist on us abiding by the law. Its only fair that they abide by the law too. That means allowing the FAC holder to retain his FAC for inspection pending printing of a new one.
Re: Full FAC?
I used to sit about 10 foot away from the developer who was trying to fix the National Firearms Database...I really wouldn't trust a quick call via Airwave to clarify an FACs details.
But there again...I worked on the communications software so there's a good chance the radio would pack up before the database

It is the case in Northern Ireland. I bought a fair bit when my variation was in.saddler wrote:NEVER heard of ANY "covering letter" - don't see how it would be legal as ALL SALES must be entered onto the FAC by lawSevenSixTwo wrote:Don't you get issued a covering letter in lieu, permitting you to buy ammunition while your FAC is in?

Re: Full FAC?
The NFDB piggy backs PNC I now believe, because the whole system was shoite! A quick PNC check shows a "firearms marker" and for a relevant check, this page can then be opened and the details of the certification accessed. When divisional policing, I worked a semi rural patch. Call would come in from "Mrs Miggins" that there was a man in the field with a gun. No helicopters, no ARV's, bog standard patrol would attend. If no tickets, a quick check, job's a good 'un...
It is not an offence not to have your FAC or SGC with you. Conversly, it is an offence not to be able to produce your diving licence, both parts, your certificate of insurance and your MoT if needed..... Everyone here carry all of them every time they drive their car? No, of course you don't. But, like certificate details, all of this info is also available via PNC. Rarely is even a HORT/1 issued these days!
As an aside, I rarely have my ticket these days.... The police are so slow in varying FACs, because of my impullsive gun buying nature, if I "needed" mine evrytime I shot, the guns would hardly get out of the cabinet!!
