We have moved on from bolt actions in big calibres to semi autos and burst fire in smaller calibres for a reason.

And your P14 would be at a disadvantage in house clearance or against massed attacks or when your trench gets overrun.

and the wrong reason at that. If you shoot someone with a .30 cal they stay dead. How does 5.56 / .223 match that ?

Well, maiming or incapacitating rather than killing will do the job better according to many experts.

And then you have to think of the guys carrying all the ammo - especially now that they also have body armour etc

And 7.62x39 is a .30 calibre but better suited to REAL combat ranges.

And there are other intermediate calibres to be considered now.............................not just 5.56mm

Indeed - which brings us to the fact that in warfare, very few ( apart from snipers ) shots are well aimed. In fact during WW2 the research tended to show that it was mostly supressing fire.

That's why in recent wars, they fire 10,000 rounds per one kill. Not a lot of aiming going on !!!

Oh dear, I may actually agree with Meles here!

The move away from accurate .303 / .308 shooting has not done the military any favours.

Strange how history continues to repeat itself.

I've done my own penetration tests with 308/303 and 223 rounds using stacks of Tesco catalogs and 30mm steel plate...Believe me, if I was ever in a situation where the target is shooting back, I'd want a 30 caliber.

BTW I've recently fired a FAL and a M14...Nice!
