I always seem to be met with stares of abject horror when I ask for AAA or SG in high street shops, which is why I now order online in bulk.
AAA = ?
SG = ?

Think Shotgun and you'll have your answer.

"What do you want that for?", they invariably say...
"Well, to blast the f*ck out of stuff" [is my imagined reply].

I avoid 'country' style shops like the plague now - the slightest whiff of tweed and I about turn at the door. I'll give my money to people who move with the times and cater for all shooters and disciplines.
That surprises me as most gun shops will stock some cartridges in those sizes usually for foxing though SG has a very limited use and to be honest is usually avoided.

I wouldn't say that gunshops normally specialise but they will usually only stock items that they know they have a ready market for. Think of the main use of AAA and you will realise that there is normally not much call for lead shot in this size these days. I have a box of 3" in AAA in my cabinet that has been there for 12 or more years and I have only used a couple of cartridges from it and that includes paterning.

I appreciate that this is resurrecting an old thread but I found the conversation very interesting -
I know fellow target club members who view anything but their discipline (prone 22 target rifles) as a poor joke and beneath them. Lightweight Sporting Rifle is obviously crap to these folk as "the targets are so big how could you ever miss the ten?" And then you tell them they can't have a little lie down, rest on both elbows and sellotape their rifle to one arm in order to shoot, and that they will have to shoot stood up, off-hand, find a way/posture to get steady and they get all upset!!! They get even more annoyed when you make them try it and they don't do very well. So, if even fellow club members can be annoying arses to one another it's not surprising that folk from truly different disciplines (ie hunting/targets/clays) can be awkward towards others. A damn shame though as we really are all after the same thing: to legally, safely and productively engage in a fantastic sport that requires great self-discipline and consideration for others.
I even get fed up having to be shirty in return towards folks but so many of them don't understand how offensive they are being until I give them an earache, they get all upset, and then I explain what just happened and why. Even then some still don't get it.

It annoys me that other fac holders and shooters turn up their noses....I've tried all types of shooting over the past 30 years...today I shoot vermin fox and deer but don't get out as much as ide like, I do clays regularly,pheasant syndicates are too much bother for me....I hated tr and co2, I tried f class but found that to be checkbook shooting if u wanna get anywhere...I mostly just do club level stuff these days, I've got my collection as I want it a mixture of old and new and some fun stuff too...

Back to the original post I personally be there are far more folk that shoot on the land or just do clay shooting than there is club level plinkers...

People like me who do both I have found are rare.
When someone says "it's not about the money" you know what? it probably is all about money!

Not so rare, approximately 50-60% of my rifle club are also sporting shooters either with a shotgun or rifle or both. We are not such a rare breed as you may think.
I suppose geography will have a large part to play with it. It will depend on where you live, townies obviously have less access to sporting shooting be it rabbit, fox, game, wildfowling or stalking.
