The US call them silencers due to the first patents filed by designers. Designers like Maxim, who called his creation a Silencer for whatever reason.

The majority of the shooting fraternity in the US call them suppressors. If you go back and look to the link you posted you'll notice that most of the patents there refer to them as suppressors. Guys, we could do the cock waving think for as long as it takes. For every link you throw up showing "silencers" I could throw up a half dozen showing suppressors. I live here fella's, have done for a long time and you can bank on it when I tell you that very few folks here call them silencers. Now if you were to move to Hollywood well then that's a different matter, they have silencers everywhere.
