That is not too far down, maybe 15 to 20 miles on the 405 or 1 - however it can be a slow journey on the 405 ... 8 lanes in each direction in some places and still get solid with slow traffic! PCH (1) can be easier and is more scenic if you go further down!
Or further up...!

My understanding is that it is a federal law that rental guns cannot be loaned out to non-Californian residents.

I went to SF last year and could not hire a pistol, but was told that I could shoot _if_ I had gone back with a gun owning resident. He/she could have rented anything in the shop and I could have shot it.

California is strange like that.

Just a minor edit

Why did kamikaze pilots wear helmets?

God loves stupid people, that is why he made so many of them.

What a rediculous statement to make.

Aah.....Manhattan Beach.......used to know a couple of lovely Californian girls that lived there back in the late 80's. Happy memories of that place ;)

And yes, I couldn't find anywhere in the San Francisco bay area back in the 2006-2009 period when making lots of visits there that I could rent and fire a 1911, such is the California rules.

In April, I'm off to Texas for the first time, and I'm guessing (hoping) with Texas being Texas, getting reunited with a 1911 won't be so difficult there.

Boss has told me I can fly on the Tuesday, meetings on Wednesday & Thursday and fly back Thursday night!

May not have much opportunity to do anything :-(

Thanks for all the tips though.

The last gun shop in SF closed recently. The city is strongly opposed to firearms ownership so I don't think anyone is going to find a place to rent firearms within or near the city limits of SF.

You need to manage your boss and his expectations!

A late morning flight from LHR to LAX will get you there early afternoon, so after clearing immigration, customs, collecting rental car and getting to hotel, you will be in your room early evening. A late afternoon or early evening flight will mean you will finally get to the hotel around 10:00 in the evening!

For the return flight, you would be looking at the late evening 21:00 departures to allow you a full day in LA. Any earlier and you will be cutting down on time in meetings. Those flights will not get back into LHR until late on Friday afternoon and thus you will not be able to do any work on the Friday.

So, why not persuade your boss that to ensure your FULL availability in meetings on the Thursday, you should stay an extra night and take the Friday flight back to the UK - it will land on Saturday, however you will be willing to do that in exchange for Friday morning free in LA.

What does the company gain? You are committed to being thee until everything is concluded on Thursday.
What do they lose? One night in a hotel.
Overall - they benefit

What do you gain? A day free in LA to shop and relax.
What do you lose? Free time on Saturday - which has already been offset by Friday.

And check out flight costs - you may well find Friday is cheaper than Thursday and if so, the financial cost to your company is minimal.

The 'bay area' covers a rather large area, which is why I mentioned it that way........I wasn't specifically referring to downtown SF.

But, even at a 40-50 mile radius away from downtown SF or over in the 'central valley' it wasn't possible.
