Scope rails+scope rings questions
As I have said before I know nothing about scopes. Scope rails the different types of rings its all double Dutch to me. I can not believe it would be so difficult to fit a scope to my latest rifle.
Ok I thought machine a mounting block buy or make a rail for pickyer toes or whatever they call them or weaver what ever.
So I have the mounting block I have a rail. None of the rings I have got will go on it.
Some of the rings are 11mm wide and I guess fit on a dovetail I'm assuming they are for small bore.
I have a set of 30mm rings but the clamp bit is only 18mm wide and look like they are for a dovetail rail definitely not a pickyer toe nail rail or weaver.
I have a set of TIKKA 25.4 rings but they are also 18mm clamp size I guess they are for a dove tail rail as well.
I can not find any 18mm dovetail rails any were and I made pickyer toe nail one any way.
I don't have any mounts that will fit on the weaver/pickyer toe nail ones.
Some one explain to me how this works I'm totally confused.
I just checked I have got some parker hale RAH5.3 as well but they wont go on either am I going to have to make a 18mm dovetail rail.

Re: Scope rails+scope rings questions
What rifle ?
Re: Scope rails+scope rings questions
Schulz Larsen target rifle it's a Mauser 98 action. It was fitted with a Alfred J Parker aperture rear sight when I got it. It currently is not drilled and tapped for a rail. But it will be shortly once I get this sorted out.

Get a Brownells catalog
Study the section(s) on scope rings & bases.

What width is the block you machined or did you buy it and what was it specified as? If you have some basic dimensions you can share such as width and slot spacings I can probably suggest which type of rings will best suit your needs.

Re: Scope rails+scope rings questions
I thought pickur titty rails were 20mm..?? so your 30mm rings with 18mm clamp (I assume thats 18mm closed) are probably designed to fit the 20mm rails??
Re: Scope rails+scope rings questions
No they definitely don't fit the rail.
The rail is 140mm long 20mm wide the spacing between the cut outs for the rings is 5mm. I have several pieces of rail I can alter the length but I can not do anything with the width or spacing with out screwing them up. There is also a bit more machining to do to make the rail fit the new rear support block and I then have to make one for the front of the rail which I don't see as being a problem its the rear support block that's the challenge.
So what do I do with the 30mm rings and the TIKKA 25.4mm ones with the 18mm dovetail fitting are they no good for anything. It looks like the 30mm ones are windage adjustable.

Re: Scope rails+scope rings questions
photographs would help.
Re: Scope rails+scope rings questions
Did you buy or machine the '20,0mm' rail yourself and if the latter to what drawing or specification? Yes some pictures would be handy.

What sort of google searches do you do that has your auto correct turn Picatinney to the above?!!Daryll wrote: pickur titty

In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?
