Ive got 2 Howa both in GRS stocks. One in 223 and one in 308 heavy barel. Both came as kits with mod bipod and scope oh and hard cases .
The only trouble i had was with the 308 bipod (which was changed )other than that there fine and at £1300 each i thought they were a bargain.

Re: First Centrefire .223 - R700?
I'm taking it then that most guns are at least ''good''.
My first .223 was a Remy 700 but a 1.12 not a good choice as a target rifle.
In time I sold that and moved on to a custom built Barnard action with tru flite 1.7 barrel and it's very accurate as you'd expect. So as long as you choose correctly for the type of shooting you intend to do you should be OK.
No real ''plums'' then to stay away from?

Re: First Centrefire .223 - R700?
I'm fairly new to shooting and I have to say I love my Remington 700 .223!
This was my first CF rifle purchase and I'm glad I went with this option (Was a toss up between Remington, Howa or a Tikka)
I wanted to get something reasonably good yet not break the bank so although lovely the Tikka was out of the running.
I have the rifle fitted with a Hawke 3-9x50 AO (not the best scope I know but I can see what I'm aiming at and hit the target easily at 100m)
Only shot 80 rounds though it so far so barely got to know it yet I'm getting tidy groups using cheap 55g Hornady Training Ammo! (£16 for 50)
I bought mine new from Rimfire Magic as they do a few bits and pieces so you get something better than off the shelf (tidied up the muzzle, bolt rails and the trigger)
Those tweaks seem to help as the bolt is very smooth despite the matt finish on the bolt and the rifle is mechanically more accurate than the person pulling the trigger!
Will need to have a fiddle with the internal magazine spring as the last round does not chamber properly and gets stuck on its journey to the chamber which is annoying but for my purposes it does not bother me single loading it and would probably like to get a detachable magazine as well as wish it was screwcut for a moderator to tame it's bark but for my purposes (target shooting only) it is just what I need :)
