Where to sell....anyone used Holts etc.?

Hi All,

Put this in General as while it's about a rimfire rifle, the question is more about selling in general.....not put it in the 'For Sale' for the same reason...

I've got a pre-1968 Remington 572 fieldmaster which is one of the very limited run 'Lightweight' variations. These can be identified by having no visible serial number (making it pre-1968) a chromed magazine tube and a metal butt plate. I think it's the 'Crow wing black' version and could well be one of the very early model 572s. It's in good(ish) condition with rifling still visible and most blueing still in place, shoots nicely and doesn't jam much. In the US they sell for $500 to $800(ish) depending on condition due to their rarity.

Anyway.....question is......where to sell it?

If I go with Guntrader / Gunstar etc. then I think it will be looked at as just another £75-100 .22 pump action.

Trade-in or sold to a RFD would be next to nothing if they don't realise it's possibly a pretty rare rifle.

Proper gun auction? I've never used one before but I think I'd get the best chance of a collector realising the true worth of the rifle.

I've found Holts online but was wondering what it's like to sell via a gun auction, has anyone here done it before?

Holts - get the impression that a lot of the guns there are old stock that the trade is selling on, so folk look there for a bargain

I'd do a VERY detailed description of it on GunTrader

Ask Dromia to list it on his website maybe?

Sadly the main market for this IS in the USA as they have a thriving collector scene for older .22 rifles there

Check out the sellers premium...eye watering ..then, plus vat. I have used Southams, Bedford...bit cheaper than Holts. I am afraid that being rare does not make any old rimfire desirable in auctions. I think I got £25 for a Supersport ...sold the spare mag for £35....
These days the only rimfires that seem desirable are those that look like plastic copies of military jobs...walnut and blued steel seems to be out of fashion...

One bright spot...Holts do sell to the USA..give them a ring and discuss...cost you a phonecall.

$500 rifle in states, not going to achieve same over here by the time of outlay on fees etc you will be lucky to recieve half that

Holts now have some auction tie up with some one in the US.
Sorry that's vague but I didn't read their email properly and binned it!
May be worth asking them.

US market prices are really not the same as here and no direct parallel can be drawn. Americans can't believe we have a stout market of sub £300 Anschutz target rifles for example, yet they wouldn't consider 500 bucks for a new 10/22...

I would do an incredibly detailed Gunstar / Guntrader ad with lots of great photos to be honest.

Our club has a commemorative model Winchester 9422 that they've listed before at substantially less than the US market price but not a single sniff over here. It's a shame but that's the market for you.

Forget about "collectible" in the UK. Not many collect probably because of legislative constraints. Of course, some do, but the market value in the US in no way equates to here.

Two cases in point. A Colt Python, just about any Colt Python with bring several thousand dollars in the US. My mate bought a mint, blued, 6 inch version on s7.3 for 800 quid from a dealer. I recently bought a 1904 vintage Marlin that in the US would bring probably $3K, but take away dies, cases and other extras in the deal, I paid less than 700 GBP for it....

Sad thing is, your rifle is just that, another 1960s, rimfire pump and is only worth what someone will pay. And probably no far off your estimate....

David, it sounds like their 'rarity' is probably due to the fact that most of them are now in skips. Remington have made some great rifles, but this doesn't sound like one of them.

Put it on Gunstar, and see how it goes.

Thanks for the replys - all noted! I'm not planning on retiring on the proceeds and understand US / UK markets are very different beasts.

Turns out there's a Holts valuer based in Cardiff (I think they're sort of part-time 'consultants') so I'm going to meet him sometime next week to see what he thinks I can get for it.

FYI: It only cost £25 a year or two ago so I don't have to get much to be in profit!

Took it out for some range time this afternoon and the firing pin has broken at least I think it is; will strip down and check tomorrow....

Good looking rifle there WalesDave, I am a big fan of the older fires, sadly they are often not appreciated by many because they have the wrong name on the receiver. One of mine is a 1948 Savage Model 5 (bolt action 15 shot tube) that shoots as well as a CZ452 we have in the armoury, the difference is the Savage was going to be destroyed and cost me a tenner to get home and I probably paid over the odds at that!
