Sound metering for a bunch of moderators

#1 Post by Odd Job »

Does anyone have the kit and know-how to do accurate sound moderation tests? I need to work out the control values for a standard rifle and then the control dB reduction for 10 moderators on that same rifle under the same conditions. I'll have to do one batch of control tests and then at some point about a year later, another batch.

I would like to hire somebody to do two lots of testing, preferably at our range in Richmond, London. Anybody have any contacts?

We have a sound meter, do us. Have used it to measure the relative efficiencies of several moderators...

Ah, you might well be the kind of striped mammal I am looking for then. What equipment do you use?

I've done some measurements with a decibel meter, however I came under scrutiny when i posted my results. Although i had a relatively expensive (to the amateur) sound level metre, unfortunately for firearms it does not sample at a fast enough rate and may miss the absolute peak sound level.

There are Military Test Guidelines that are available for an accurate repeatable test that's at an ISO standard. (Mil Std 1474D)

It also requires a Class 1 Sound Meter. upwards of £2-3000, or hireable by the day. but comes expensive.

I wanted to put together a test rig and try and get as many mods as possible tested from the same rifle under the same conditions. but when looking into how to do it properly, it became too expensive a project :(

You could have a word with Will at Barton Gun Works, http://www.bartongunworks.com/ he builds for the likes of Mauser and Edgar Bros as well as more special stuff and is an all round good sort. You can mention my name as well :good:

Yep I had a look online and realised I could never buy my own meter, that's for sure!
