HARTFORD, Conn. — A judge on Friday dismissed a wrongful-death lawsuit by Newtown families against the maker of the rifle used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting massacre, citing an embattled federal law that shields gun manufacturers from most lawsuits over criminal use of their products.

State Superior Court Judge Barbara Bellis granted a motion by Remington Arms to strike the lawsuit by the families of nine children and adults killed and a teacher who survived the Dec. 14, 2012, school attack, in which a gunman killed 20 first-graders and six educators with a Bushmaster AR-15-style rifle made by Remington.


The families were seeking to hold Remington accountable for selling what their lawyers called a semi-automatic rifle that is too dangerous for the public because it was designed as a military killing machine . Their lawyer vowed an immediate appeal of Friday's ruling .

After this there'll probably be a section in US made guns manuals that warns you against shooting people! The only American gun I'd owned until last month was a Marlin underlever and I don't remember the manual being that bad, but since getting a S&W 15-22 recently I found the sheer amount of warnings and cautions in the manual bordering on the ridiculous. Of a 32 page manual there are 15-16 pages of 'safety' warnings alone, including the line "Do not fire randomly into the sky" and every page has some kind of warning on it!!

There is a line in my Unique Alpine's manual along the lines of "Don't use this firearm [....] in the comission of a criminal act".

The owners manual for my Harley Davidson is only the stupid thickness it is because of the infestation of 'no s*** Sherlock' style safety warnings that just make you scratch your head in disbelief.

They were grasping at straws.
It's understandable, I suppose, after such an event people feel someone should pay.
When it comes to financial compensation for the victims' families it certainly wasn't going to come from the late Adam Lanza's risible estate.
So that left going for the school's insurance on the basis of failure to provide adequate security ... which was always going to be massively unpopular as well as difficult to to prove under the circumstances.

So they went for the obvious choice - blaming the nasty gun manufacturers.
That was a non-starter too, for the reasons given in the judgment I guess they hoped Remington would quietly settle out of court to avoid publicity but that could never happen because they woulkd be setting themselves up to compensate for every crime committed with one of their products - and the industry would never allow that for the knock-on affect to all other manufacturers of firearms and bladed implements.

Worth a shot, I guess they thought.

While I agree with all the sentiments and general 'Louis Theroux' type sneering at the farcical American legal culture, we are the silly buggers goose-stepping to the tune of our bizarre nanny-state firearms laws that makes us the laughing stock of the 'civilised' world.

Well what goes up must come down - somewhere.

Also in certain less sensible parts of the planet some brain dead nutters fire guns in the air at weddings and other celebrations..not unheard of for a bride / groom / guest / window hanger to get killed.

Cops here have an insanely stupid habit of firing warning shots in the air - yes they ARE that stupid - but it's what they do. And again, people looking out of windows DO get hurt / killed.

Then again, too many people need to be told everything nowadays, no one has common sense any more!
