NRA club insurance....and NSRA club insurance...does not now include personal accident cover...if it ever did..so if you accidentally shoot another club member...you may have insurance cover...if you accidentally shoot yourself....no cover.
The NRA made this clear in the 2017 renewal notice...I had to browse through the NSRA website to establish this with the club NSRA insurance. I intend to make this clear to all my club members.
So why take out insurance as a club if someone being accidentally shot isnt going to be covered?
What's the point of having insurance if the company you appoint just argue about what member of the public is liable?
Depends on the circumstances. What if the club supplied a probationer with a gun to shoot who was drunk/high/mentally disturbed? Or a defective gun which blew up on someone etc
If another club member shoots me then I sue that club member and also the club. The club has a duty of care to everyone on their premises, the Insurers would argue about whether they have failed in that duty of care. The clubs insurance covers their costs, the other shooters insurance covers his costs (its a condition on my ticket that I must have adequate insurance in place - I imagine thats the same for most target shooters?). If i shoot myself then its either tough luck (I could try suing the club depending on the circumstances) or if I have insurance that covers personal injury in place then I can claim off that.
Thats my understand of how it works (I'm probably wrong)!
I used to be involved in radio control car racing - one of the drivers got hit by another car whilst she was marshalling and badly broke her leg. She assumed that as insurance was a condition of entry to the meeting then she would be able to claim for her injury. She couldn't as it was only PLI insurance. She could have sued the other driver though and if successful his insurance would have paid out. She would have needed to pay out substantial upfront costs to do that though which she wasn't able (or willing) to do.
