Handgun Ban Repeal
Hi,
As someone who is fairly new to the shooting world and who was only 12 when handguns were taken from us, is there any movement among UK shooters to try and get the ban overturned?
I maybe being naive here however the snowdrop campaign which started this only gathered around 50,000 signatures, we have a lot more certificate holders across the nation than this figure, can we do anything? Or have we given up?
Is there any interest to have pistol shooting back in the UK? Is there any movement / petitions I can start / join?

There used to be several 'campaigning' organisations...
And I remember going on a pretty big March in London.

Re: Handgun Ban Repeal
I think most legal avenues have been persued over the years.... as much as I'd love to see it overturned, (I had to hand in 7 pistols), I really dont think it ever will.
There have been various petitons on the .gov site, but I don't think any of them achieved enough to have it even discussed in the House.
Snowdrop may have only had 50K signatures, but they had a lot of additional public support and the gov'ment of the time had to be seen to be doing something, so we lost them.
There are several reasons I don't think we'll ever get them back...:
1. Not even every shooter wants them back... I've seen in this forum someone saying that they can't see why anyone would want one, so we can't even get 100% of shooters supporting us, never mind politicians or the public.
2. If a future gov'ment proposed to allow the public ownership of pistols there would be a public outcry..." think of the children"... etc.
3. If that didn't put the gov'ment off and they still went ahead, they would be hung, drawn and quartered by the public at the first shooting (even if it didn't involve a legally held pistol), and no politician would want to risk that.
The only way I could ever see pistols in public hands again, (and this is a pretty depressing thought), is if the ISIS / Jihadist situation gets really bad and we're in the Israel situation where selected people could carry in case of terrorist attack... of course the gov'ment will resist that almost to the fall of society, saying that the police / army are there to protect us... but of course, despite their best efforts, they can't...

I agree with the above... depressing, ain't it..?Daryll wrote: of course the gov'ment will resist that almost to the fall of society, saying that the police / army are there to protect us... but of course, despite their best efforts, they can't...
No Govt. of this country will ever allow us to own pistols again.

The best opportunity was missed, the 2012 Olympics. Even the reintroduction of .22 only would have been a start, but that bus is looking no gone.
As mentioned though, there is not the support in the public, parliament or even shooters themselves to to reinstate...

In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Legal ownership can only be via very restricted options:
Relocation to part of the UK where they're still legal
S7 for historic designs at designated ranges
S7 stored at home (without ammunition entitlement)
S5 for humane despatch

Thanks guys for your responses, I was just putting out the feelers to see if / what could be done. It's a shame really to think about it, but I guess we are where we are.
In my opinion we seem to have loads of liberal petitions taking off in the uk, but nothing to do with helping legal firearm holders, I just think it's sad. I'm just hoping this new EU Ban doesn't impact us as well, it's as if our laws are getting ever more restrictive :-(

Its interesting the difference here and the rest of the UK. Most here probably doint know that people can have handguns, and even less care. As for the politicians most support things the way they are, it was local politicians that prevented the ban applying in N/I.

It also appears that there is a far more "adult" attitude to firearms in the Province, than there is in the rest of the country. Up and down the mainland bed wetters have taken to social media in outrage when police officers have been seen with firearms, never mind the concept that of "ordinary people" having such items...

They wouldn't like it here then if they doint like seeing armed police. :) they might change their minds if armed cops stop an attack they are caught up in.Up and down the mainland bed wetters have taken to social media in outrage when police officers have been seen with firearms, never mind the concept that of "ordinary people" having such items...
