Hi all.
When you put in for a variation have you got to state say 300wsm or can you just put 30 cal and get a 300wsm or whatever 30 cal you want.cheers Berger

Lincs and Beds would both expect you to say 300WSM however other counties seem to have different ideas.

I was asking the audience on behalf of someone else.ive always asked for a particular calibre eg 6.5x47 but I have heard others say they would just put down 6.5 cal.i was never sure that was a true statement.

This comes up quite a bit, the best option is to talk to your FEO and get it from them. The different counties seem to have differing view, but in general most want you to specify calibre and cartridge.

As an aside I know indirectly of someone living in Scotland who had a rifle on his FAC simply described as a '6.5mm rifle' with ammunition listed only as 6.5mm which led to some confusion as he would buy any cheap 6.5mm ammunition regardless of cartridge when it became available and then wonder why it would not chamber. I know of this as I ended up with his rifle and even the shop were not totally sure of what it was.

Ah yes, the Asperly Aimless was indeed available in a military configuration of my memory serves me correctly.

Unless I was wanting a rifle in a specific cartridge I always asked Grampian Police for a variation in the generic calibre (i.e. 22 centre fire, 30 cal, 9mm etc), which they granted without issue - so far Police Scotland has been happy to follow suit, fingerscrossed it will continue.

If your ticket is vague you might find that RFD's will be reluctant to put their neck on the line to sell you something. I had 7.62 ammunition on mine, my RFD said he wouldn't sell me .308 but he told me that some dealers he knew would.

I've heard this story before.how daft is that.i am not sure why rules are not the same for every firearms licensing department.i do building type work.i did one small site with 14 houses on which had to be inspected by building control and the NHBC.when we were doing the foundation both had to inspect before we concreted.one would want a layer of mesh put in the other would want 2 layers.one would say the other was wrong doh.......
Belt and braces so we did 2 layers of mesh.
