Middle aged men with 'black rifles', or 'sniper rifles', who seem to be living out some sort of 'tactical fantasy', certainly don't help the public's perception of shooting sports...
Joining the Army, or the TA, might be a better option for these people.
As to killing animals, it should really only be done for pest control, food, or management. Shooting animals 'for sport', and chucking them away, is simply immoral.

Have you ever been to a game shoot?
Yesterday Ovenpaa came home with 2 pheasants and 2 partridges, they are at the moment hanging outside, in about a weeks time they will be breasted and cleaned and frozen down.
What the guns/beaters/pickerups are not taking home with them is put on the game wagon and taken to the game dealer, then sold to the public via various butchers. Not a lot of money in all that however nothing is chucked away.
When Ovenpaa is out shooting pigeons he takes them home with him and then they go in the freezer as well.

Don't believe everything Chris Packham and Countryfile tell you.

Could you point me to where this happens, I've been a live quarry shooter all my life and have never encountered any shooter doing this. Even shot vermin go back into the food chain in their own way via the soil and faeces of the scavengers that will feed off their remains, nothing is wasted in nature.

The sport in live quarry shooting is the pride in doing a good job well, a test of skill, a clean kill, usually in a nice environment (which can be cold, wet, uncomfortable and downright miserable at times) I see nothing wrong in that and will bear no criticism from individuals and the community at large, not at least until they all become vegans and explain how they will manage the consequences to nature of that way.

It almost certainly doesn't happen... but a lot of people I've spoken to, think it does.

The issue about the lack of national championing of gun ownership by those who should on our behalf and by mobilising gunowners has been done to death on here and their continued failure on our behalf, despite their own propaganda to the contrary, means anti perceptions will only deepen.

How can you tell the difference between a black rifle owner who is a sportsman from a fantacist ?

Looking at the stats on gun ownership, it does seem to be increasing year on year so that's something atleast !
I think also the numbers of fac/sgc holders is the highest it's ever been since records began ??
