Overt signs of security for these kinds of people enhance public safety by showing the average Whacko that taking a punt would be a dangerous exercise. Just walk through the centre of London and you will see the Met tooled up with every imaginable weapon. This is sensible and hardly a sign of hypocrisy by any party.
Maybe in the US, and granted the picture is of US citizens, but in the UK its a different story. The Police Guide to Firearms Licensing specifically says,
"Applications for the grant of a firearm certificate for the applicant’s, or another’s, protection, or that of premises, should be refused on the grounds that firearms are not an acceptable means of protection in Great Britain. It has been the view of successive Governments for many years that the private possession and carriage of firearms for personal protection is likely to lead to an increase in levels of violence."
And the people saying that are sitting behind armed guards. So what if they're more likely to be a target. Smokers and old people are more likely to have fires in their homes, maybe they should get a priority fire service??

I should also suggest you look at the latest copy of Gun Mart and the Sportsman Association article where they talk about two people who nearly lost their tickets (they did actually until appealed) because of what they were posting and liking on Facebook. When you hit renewal Joe there is a good chance that your local Plod will be looking at your Facebook profile, I suggest you carefully weigh what you post on it!
Those people were 'liking' and sharing ridiculously racist/xenophobic BNP/EDL type propaganda. There are laws against racism and religious prejudice, not calling politicians idiots

As to "self defence" - in your ideal world, we would all have that right. But...........so would those who feel unable to go out at the weekend without getting drunk asap and having a fight over some nonsense. And those who feel unable to watch a football match without utter hatred for the opposition turning into a fight at every oportunity.
They say guns dont kill people, people kill people ? Well, looking around me - I dont see enough civic responsibility, common sense and restraint in the UK population. I see too many people that I would not like to see armed.
No system in the world (AFAIK) permits ANYONE to own firearms without exception. Even in the most rootin' tootin' states in the US the 2nd Amendment is a qualified right. 'Gun free zones' (

) in football stadiums, pubs, nightclubs and a carry drinking limit, similar to/less than the drink driving limit would counter all of the examples given above.
