Muzzle brakes and moderators

Muzzle Brakes are just plain antisocial. I was unfortunate enough to be positioned next to someone shooting a short barrelled 300 Win Mag with a brake recently, I was showered with dirt grass and leaves every time he shot and the blast even managed to blow the lane marker off the peg between us. I felt I had no alternative but to discuss the blast with the shooter who seemed to find it quite funny. Probably best not to comment further.

When I posted that people didn't like my muzzle brake so I was looking at getting a moderator, someone commented:

"A decent pair of ear muffs and joining a club that isn't full of poofs would be cheaper."

Personally I like muzzle brakes, much like getting showered in .22 brass, it adds to the atmosphere!

There has for a long time been concern about brakes, I think that was more to do with blast affecting the shooters on the point next to you (possibly sharing the same point) than noise for neighbouring houses.

Is this just a continuation of that old wound?

probably, we as a club have had comments from neighbours even before any shots were fired! even though those same neighbours seem to think its OK to obscure half the targets everytime a shot is fired

Adjacent muzzle brakes come into the same category as adjacent Saturday morning shooters, frequently met on Century, who have to rabbit non-stop at high volume.......

My LMT .308 - as soon as I got it I put a Ase Utra CQB on it. Very accurate.

Then, with CSR rundowns in mind, I put a muzzle brake on it to save weight. Groups opened up a fair bit. Not sure if this is harmonics or the fact its barking so loud !!

Anyway, the Ase Utra is going back on !!! I would rather put up with the extra weight to gain the accuracy and comfort ( mod absorbs as much recoil as brake )

Harmonics Bri, you can actually tune the groups for a long barrel to an extent by shifting a weight up and down it, so if you significantly change what is hanging on the end.

Did you develop the load with the moddy on?

16" barrel. GGG 168gr factory match.

The only problem with moderators is they're a consumable part, but thankfully they do last quite a long time.

This is the thread protector on the end of the brake, but unscrew it and screw on your mod... The moderator isn't that much wider in diameter than the brake. It's a good system IMO.

I agree with you. My rifle came with one fitted and when at Bisley I go to great pains to make sure I'm not upsetting any fellow shooters.

On MoD ranges we all have them and nobody minds.

I note that the variation form only has slots for firearms and ammunition.

Can I put a moderator in one of the firearm slots and state my (long list of) good reasons in a cover letter?
