I was reading an article the other day that was talking about the new DMR rifle that we're taking on, and saying that maybe all Squaddies should be issued with it...

Dunno about the Army, but I'd take the 7.62 Nato over the 5.56 any day of the week. Yes, it's heavy, and no doubt there are lots of technical .... and probably financial .... reasons why we wimped out and stopped using it, but I just LIKE the 7.62. End of.

From a current logistics point of view it makes sense but 308 (any larger calibre or any switch to any calibre for that matter) has it's draw backs. There's always going to be compromises - however as much as I like the idea of a bigger round, it's harder to train someone to shoot accurately, anything above semi-auto is difficult to control - correct me if I'm wrong but a lot of military doctrine is now about volume of fire. You can't carry as much and the issues of range that Afghanistan highlighted - will they be repeated in the next conflict - or will it be much shorter ranges? The old addage does suggest you're also preparing from your last war.
However will the 6/ 7mm round that people talk about do everything the militaries need? Will it be 'too' powerful for a personal arm but not have enough grunt for a gpmg role?
I don't think 308 will be the answer, it seems unlilkey that a major military will take what would be viewed as a step back with small arms development. I do think a proper intermediate round like a 6 or 7mm would be interesting but I'm sure we were here back in the early 1910s then early 50's...
It's something I'm certainly watching with interest. The French adopting of the HK416 could potentially be a move, which with the L85 gradually coming to its service life (Ian at forgotten weapons did say an A3 variant is coming though), could be replicated by the MoD here - effectively taking an off the shelve solution, but as referenced above the calibre choice will be interesting.

If they do, does that mean my 7.62 nato for my K98k will get cheaper? :-)
Re: Army going back to 7.62?
They will settle on an intermediate calibre like 6.5 or 6.8 that fits the AR platform - mark my words.
