I disagree with the stance creeping into the discussion that people should have or be able to demonstrate they can obtain the funds to almost immediately go out and buy all the firearms they want slots for.

By having a broader choice of slots the window of opportunity of obtaining a good buy / bargain in one of your preferred choices is widened. That seems perfectly reasonable to me. As does being in the position to bulk buy ammunition for better deals.

Sod them - and probably the same attitude if you have a disability that excludes you from one or more disciplines...

I suggest you read the post again and assimilate the information before posting unhelpful statements.

To maintain club ethos and integrity as a condition of membership there is an agreement to acquire appropriate firearms and ammunition to participate in all club activities. That's the "good reason". To retain full membership, members must possess the appropriate firearms and ammunition under the authority of a personal firearm certificate. It's not a "plinking" club and neither is it a "traditional" small bore target shooting club.

Historically, it was a handgun club. Following the introduction of the 1997 Firearms (Amendments) Acts, which effectively banned private possession of "short firearms", club activities have continued using pistol calibre lever action rifles (old school with no optics permitted), .22LR semi-automatic carbines, long barrelled pistols and revolvers. We have a guy in our club who managed to go from air rifles to 5 section 1 on first application followed by 3 in the first year on a variation ,he shouldnt have 1 in my mind ...

I make that three pushing to a possible five different firearms.

I am a member of one of the larger clubs in the UK at over a 1000 members (NCB) The overriding club requirements for the club are that you stay safe and have fun, there are no requirements nor pressure to shoot multiple disciplines.

Avon and Somerset are top of the class. Asked for 8 on my first FAC and got 7. Thought better and went with it then put a variation in about 6 months later. Have had every variation granted since without issue. Variations and renewals take about 2 weeks. Happy days.

I think it's best to get your foot in the door then go from there. There are two things at play here, the Police doing it the cautious old school way and the applicant reading the law word for word and demanding everything he believes he has the right to. Neither shall meet.

It's all relative.

You can purchase everything you require second hand... a Rossi lever action, Ruger 10/22 (with a cheap red dot), CZ452 (with a modestly priced optic), Norinco JW-25A (iron sights), Taurus LBR, GSG 1911 LBP, etc.

The main issue here is the obstruction and idiotic statements from the FEO and his line manager which are unacceptable.

He said to choose three, otherwise he might chose three for you. (Please direct me to the relevant section in the Firearms Act where this is lawful)

"my sergeant is strict and does not like putting too many guns on the street" (Is he suffering from cretinism? I'm not convinced this statement will be recorded in the official records because only a person of borderline intelligence would make such a statement. It begs the question does this person have the necessary skills to be employed in policing (has the brains of a rocking horse).

The application has been submitted as it stands because the applicant wants 7 guns and the supervisor/designated officer can advise the applicant in writing the initial decision with a clear explanation of the decision making process based upon consideration of all relevant information.

If you feel that it is necessary to restrict the applicant in the interests of public safety and/or for the prevention of disorder or crime why agree to issue a FAC in the first instance? 3, 4, 7 or 12 guns makes no difference whatsoever if the applicant is of good character, has the appropriate storage capacity and has an acceptable level of security plus has "good reason".

Perhaps I'm too much of a fundamentalist or radical but I expected more support from the shooting community.

Guns on the street.......right well there's me with seven give or take , there's a couple of guys further down from me who do a bit of decoying so there are probably a dozen or so guns on my street alone.

It's just a matter of context old boy.
