I got a reply back from my MP. Says he's not against gun ownership and glad the Govt hasn't gone for knee jerk reactions to gun control...

And then parrots the Govt. line about anti materiel rifles, range & penetration, more rapid than bolt action, comparable to semi automatic firearms.
Clearly didn't pay attention to my pointing out that .50s aren't anti materiel & that lever release are much slower than semi autos.

Also made no mention of my comments about the proposal to ban other weapons (presumably they aren't mentioned in the Govt issue standard response template he copied from).
If this gets to a vote we've no chance.

Sorry guys a bit late to this thread, and apologies if it's been covered before.

Its has (obviously) sparked some significant discussion at my local club.

My understanding is so far that

1) A .50 cal has never been used to commit an offence in the UK.
2) Destructive ammo for the .50 cal (HE, Tracer etc) is already Section 5 only?
3) A .50 cal in the hands of someone inexperienced is significantly less effective than a 7.5 ton truck in the hands of an inexperienced terrorist (well they don't get to practice much do they?)
4) That this was sparked by a .50 cal getting stolen from an RFD???? If this is the case then surely the Government should be clamping down on how the RFDs store such equipment?
5) Erosion of the current state of policing (shortages in staffing of Police Firearms departments) and their lack of manpower to be able to attend burgeries means that if you were a criminal and you were targeting an RFD, there would be a significantly reduced chance of the Police turning up in a timely manner?

Regarding No4 be careful about damning people and promoting clamp downs until you know the specifics of the situation.

If the RFD was negligent then it is an issue for that specific RFD for not complying with the security requirements.

More firearms are stolen/lost by FAC holders than RFDs. Stuff happens and no security is 100%.

A .50 cal is a firearm no more no less than a .22 to start agreeing with the HO approach of singling out gun types as "more" dangerous is playing into their divisive hands.

It is the perpetrators that make firearms dangerous not the guns themselves.

Looking at the pictures shown in the Daily Mail article I can say with almost 100% certainty that not a single Taurus 945 Pistol or Norinco CQA rifle has been stolen or lost from any British military base ever!

and how does this add up to 300? looks like someone forgot to write in a year...

I know my maths isn't the best, but that makes 300 exactly, not more than 300.

From a 'Nick Hurd' letter:

"...a paper summarising the responses will be published within 3 months of the closure of the consultation"

so, we'll hear something by early March but it won't necessarily be a decision.
