I wouldn't read the comments in the newspaper article...you might get whiplash from shaking your head back and forth.
Thanks goodness at least one gun expert has made their voice known 8-)

There is one commercially available shotgun silencer available right now because the accepted conclusion is that they do not work with firearms that use shot. You have to have an under and over, it has to be threaded for chokes and because you then can't use chokes you have zero control over changing the thread of the shot. They are expensive, over $1000 each.
If the range is using rifles then there are sound and muzzle moderators made worldwide. However they are illegal in the UK for all firearms and guns.
"Where Section 1 licensing controls apply, and subject to any applicable exemptions in the Firearms Act 1968, prospective purchasers are required to obtain prior authorization on a Firearm Certificate in order to possess, purchase or acquire a firearm suppressor."
Certain jobs can mean that a license holder could ask the local police force for an exemption on their firearms license that would allow a full bore rifle to use a suppressor but a "good reason" must be shown and is only for the firearm owner, not the weapon, or in this case the range owner / operator. This is at the discretion of the chief officer of the local police force. The logistics of having all your users shoot with moderators on their personal weapons would be very complicated indeed. Plus for obvious reasons police forces are very keen that there are not thousands of supressed firearms out there that could potentially fins their way onto the black market in the event they are stolen."

They've got a bit of a cheek - far too far away to hear anything anyway.
