Dave, the limit should only be in relation to the number of firearms held.

While a moderator is a licenseable component it is not a firearm and should not be counted as such.

Tell them you require them for hearing protection, it's a health and safety issue so they should not refuse you.

I would phone and ask them about their policy, they should not count moderators or FAC airguns towards their tier system assuming they are following the guidance correctly. I think even spare barrels may not count either but I cannot recall for certain atm.

Muzzle brakes are far more effective at recoil reduction than moderators, but they do affect others on the range. Moderators reduce your impact on others and protect your hearing in addition to your ear defenders/plugs. Some ranges have a requirement for everyone to use moderators and subsonic ammo.

Muzzle brakes I am familiar with I own a few of them I have made one or two my self I fitted my 7.62x39 Australian International Arms rifle with one made from an experimental type of carbon fibre.
The original one was agricultural and one of the reasons I believe that affected the rifles accuracy. Removing the original muzzle break and replacing it with the carbon fibre jobby and then slugging the bore and chamber and acquiring a suitably sized cast Loverin bullet mould improved the rifle,s accuracy immensely.

On one of the ranges where I shoot, muzzle brakes are forbidden due to the potential annoyance they cause nearby shooters. So I got a brake that is also a moderator mount, and when I shoot there , I attach the moderator. Very handy.

Use a tier system. The amount of slots they will issue depends on your level of security. I am all ready maxed out on firearms for my level of security if I asked for a slot for a moderator I would have to give up a firearm. So no thanks I will stick with what I have. I should probably ask them I guess how the moderator slots work if they are in addition to or part of your full allowance to possess.

Not true. I am only allowed 12 guns/rifles but have moderators for 17hmr, 22rf, .223, .243 and .308 and they don't count towards my limit.

So are you licenced by Cleveland.
Why is it in earlier posts people have said I should of asked for moderators because at a later date I could do a one for one for a firearm slot. I am confused I am getting different messages from different posters.
Not that it matters at the end of the day as I have never owned a moderator and its unlikely I ever will. As I said I don't shoot live quarry and 50% of my collection are military type rifles anyway none of the views presented here have convinced me I need one. But thanks guys for your input. Interesting.

I would also add that a moderator gets very hot very quickly. And it stays hot for a while. I tend to use the moderator for hunting, for range use I will only use the moderator if a hunt is coming up soon.
