Disapointed with reality?

Never shot the straight pull but the mill spec is no worse than other bullpups. What i really disliked was the optics mounted in the carry handle - poor eye relief, cramped neck, etc.......
What i really found i liked was the transparent mags. Never as confidence inspiring as a steel one, but being able to see at a glance how many rounds you're carrying and have to use

Oh and the balance on the LSW model is awful.

It's funny how different people have different experiences with different rifles. I don't have Scotgun's dislike of the optics/carrying handle combo and never had problems with poor eye relief etc. In fact, when I shot the SA-80, the optics was one of my main dislikes. I didn't like the reticle and I didn't like the magnification of the SA-80 sight. However, when you take into consideration that the Steyr has only x1.5 magnification and we were taught to shoot with both eyes open - my dislike of the SA-80 sights is understandable.

For the record, I never saw any broken Steyr mags or heard of any breaking. I believe one of the acceptance tests was driving a Land Rover over full and empty magazines to show that they wouldn't break and would be useable. In any case, when we got issued the Steyr, we tried this ourselves and the mags didn't break!

I was also taught to shoot pistol with two eyes open for as long as possible, the reality is part close one eye at the time of shot for me. With rifle again I keep both eyes open as long as I can, then part close the left leading to the shot and then lightly closed just as I shoot, doing it this way means I can gather as much information and light as possible for the maximum possible time.

With a low mag scope (or red-dot) it actually quite easy and instinctive for close quarter stuff.

I was having a lot of trouble with it at first because my master eye is my left eye and shooting right handed was very hard. Once I changed to a left handed rifle it was very easy and my shooting improved.

The thing is, we only ever did that style of aiming with the Steyr. With the SLR's or any other iron sighted weapon is was always the "normal" way. :-P

Both eyes open is best as when you close one eye the aiming eye strains to compensate, that is why many shooters have a difusing screen on the non aiming side of there glasses they can keep both eyes open without struggling with a sight picture. I'm a left handed shooter with right eye dominance so can't shoot with both eyes open unless I have diffuser. if i shoot right handed I can get a good sight picture with both eyes open and no diffuser, its a bugger really.

How can you get a sight picture with both eyes open?
There is a "newish" generation (Acog BAC) of optics available that enable you to shoot with both eyes open at short distance with a x4 magnification.

Problem with Bullpup triggers is that the linkage is far too long to get a decent pull
My only experience of bullpup is with the issued Famas. The trigger is perfectly acceptable for "accurate" shooting on a combat weapon.

The stock trigger is heavy and sluggish but as has been mentioned fitting a Trigger Tamer does improve things, mine when from 9-10lbs to 4-5lbs. Sounds like a lot of people have spoiled themselves with ultra-light and tuned triggers :lol:

I doubt it would make a good practical rifle as you would have rotate the gun right over to avoid getting hot brass right in the eye!

I use mine for plinking and foxes (and zombies :-P ) and it works well for that
