Sand for rear bags

#1 Post by EagerNoSkill »

Hi all

Ordered some heavy sand for my rear bags

CHROMITER :G freaking heavy excretus :o

I will have some spare since I am buying 25 kg

Will place spare sand in 2l milk bottles and have with me whenever I am at Bisley

Grab some when you see me

Density/Volume Testing and Weight Comparisons
All four sand varieties mentioned above were tested for volumetric density by weight. Each type of sand was weighed out to 1.00 lbs. on a commercial postal scale. Each 1.00 lb sample of sand was then poured loosely into a 600ml beaker and shaken minimally to level the top surface. This served to determine the volume that the sand occupied.
1.00 pound of sand displaced the following volumes:
Zircon: 149 cc
Chromite: 152 cc
Riverbed sand: 190 cc
Play Sand: 295 cc

Comparative Sand Weights by Sandbag Size
SandBag Type Play Sand Riverbed Sand Chromite Zircon
Standard 5x6i 5.1 lbs. 7.9 lbs. 9.9 lbs. 10.1 lbs.
Large 6 x 8 I. 6.8 lbs. 10.5 lbs. 13.2 lbs. 13.4 lbs.
BigFoot 6 x 13 I. 10.2 lbs. 15.8 lbs. 19.7 lbs. 20.1 lbs.

Hi All

HEAVY SAND
Update - freaking hell that stuff is heavy - and alot less voluminous than I imagined.
25kg into about 7 liters :G

BUY the CHROMITE
here is the supplier
http://www.johnwinter.co.uk/foundry-products/sands
Great service - fair price and quick delivery

Costs a £1.04 per kilogram (total for 25kg plus delivery was £27 I think)

Cheapest I found was a bag of 'sand pit' sand from toys r us.

Mind you, the US team used it during the 2009 World Champoinships! Nuf said?

I have a layer of lead shot in the bottom of mine , topped up with a bag of something my friend Ully brought me from Germany!

If anyone wants sand Chromite or Zircon (Chromite is half the price of Zircon and almost as heavy) you can get it from John Winters of Halifax www.johnwinter.co.uk
They will post a 56lb bag but it's a bit heavy..............
