Re: The perfect rifle/pistol/gun club?
The opportunity for potential new shooters to turn up and try different disciplines without having to pay excessive entry fees or wait for one or two specific days of the year.
Re: The perfect rifle/pistol/gun club?
So not much different to Tuscon Rifle Club, my favourite range
like the sound of that range

Re: The perfect rifle/pistol/gun club?
A billionaire beneficiary would be necessary reading the before mentioned.
An RFD within the club for Firearm movements would be nice.
Open in some capacity 7 days a week (I often get Mondays to myself).
A 100 yard tunnel for load development / zeroing etc
Electronic targetry on full bore ranges.
A least one range where movement between targets with loaded firearm is allowed.

Re: The perfect rifle/pistol/gun club?
Fire with movement ranges.
At least one 300yds range cleared for centrefire rifle.
Clubhouse to back onto firing points (like the NSRA at Bisley, but have a glass wall about 15' behind the firing points so you can watch the shooters without freezing to death)
Clubhouse to include food, bar and wifi and lots of comfy sofas.
Electronic targets with a mil-spec AMS/ETR system, and TR/F class style system to be available too.
Ranges to have one common firing point area and targetry to be set out at varying distances from that, removing the need to walk miles whenever you want to change distance. Flip a switch and activate the target (x)00yds further away.
Random distance snap targets, programmable from the firing point.
A resident coach available by the half hour or whatever.
24 hour access to gunroom and cleaning/maintenance area.
Night firing, to include tracer certification.
No target restrictions, unless it's a picture of someone. So military/police figure targets are OK, but pasting up photos of Elvis/Robert Mugabe/Piers Morgan are a no-no.
No target type restrictions, subject to safe splashback distances etc. If you want to blow holes in milk cartons or watermelons, go for it - on strict condition you clean up the mess straight afterwards.

Re: The perfect rifle/pistol/gun club?
Would anybody care to suggest which club they know of comes
closest? I would suggest the OSM at Bisley. Any other ideas?

Re: The perfect rifle/pistol/gun club?
I cannot think of any UK club that comes even remotely close to this. Nearest to this ideal that I know is Ulfborg Skyttecenter in Mid Jutland
Re: The perfect rifle/pistol/gun club?
No UK club will ever come close to the dream club listed here but in terms of the basics of a good calendar, clubhouse, storage, club guns and food the OSM is pretty good.

Porcupine wrote:Obviously things like 'free to use and free ammunition' would be great but realistically:
Multiple open air ranges with large U shaped berm arrangements capped at the open end by concrete floored, covered (but open on all sides - less magnification of gunshots, cooler in summer, and easier to read the wind than 'closed at the back' firing points like Melville) firing point where each firing point has a concrete shooting bench and enough space to shoot prone or standing to the side of the bench. Multiple arrangements means classes, practice sessions and competitions can be held in individual ranges allowing shooting to take place in front of the firing points, movement when shooting, and the addition of range furniture e.g. doorways, walls, windows, cars, etc, without shutting down all regular shooting.
At least one target stand provided per firing point which you can position at any distance you like. Bring your own target stands/steels etc if you like. If they could provide optional steel target rental that would be even better.
At least one four-sided berm arrangement with a shoot house that gets rearranged every week/month etc.
All kinds of targets allowed - paper, steel, clay, jugs of milk, your old washing machine from home etc. Just as long as you clean up any debris
Night shooting
Open to all, lane rental by the hour. Clean up your own mess but otherwise a 'get what you pay for' arrangement like a hotel - no having to do desk duty or help set up, this is a business you pay for a service.
Vary the time between cease fires on the ranges, so one range where cease fires are infrequent, one where they are frequent, and one in between, something like that.
Don't point guns anywhere but down range unless they're visibly unloaded (action open etc), don't shoot other people's targets, and pay for a replacement if you destroy a target stand - otherwise do what you like, shoot standing on your head if it makes you happy.
Toilets, vending machines for ear plugs, drinks and snacks, heated hut with chairs and tables to take a break in etc. Chairs behind the firing points for friends/shared lane users/etc to watch.
Descriptive, easy to find web page with lots of pictures, detailed descriptions, rules etc, online booking system
Lots of pay classes to teach different aspects of shooting to newcomers and old hands alike, and provide the opportunity for lots of interesting drills that aren't possible during regular range time e.g. shooting to your front then immediately to your rear, shooting from inside a vehicle, shooting while moving, moving then shooting etc.
Fun events like getting pyrotechnics for the range, RC planes for targets, pulling junk cars onto the range to shoot at etc.
Open all day every day
Able to drive right up to the firing points and park just behind them
So not much different to Tuscon Rifle Club, my favourite range :shakeshout:
I love the sound of this place but will never get past the police or mod over here.
I would all so like to see a Scotland and North England,Central England and Southern England shooting centas then there would be no need for accomodation on site deals could be made with local b&b's for visitors from abroad.
Re: The perfect rifle/pistol/gun club?
If it's a private range, does it need to? I thought rules only applied to 'gun clubs' that can take on probationary members and that private clubs only serving those with FACs already could do what they like. The land would need to be cleared for calibers up to whatever of course but range construction, rules etc I don't think are anything to do with the MOD or police. I may be wrong.honsu wrote:I love the sound of this place but will never get past the police or mod over here.

As far as i Know the police have to clear all ranges the part I dont think they will like is what you basicly describe as a kill house/room.Porcupine wrote:If it's a private range, does it need to?
