Phosphor bronze is used because it's softer than barrel steel so won't abrade the bore, and slightly harder than copper. It will mechanically remove copper fouling, but only by a microscopic amount. It's best used in conjunction with something like Bisley Bore cleaner, which is mildly ammoniacal. I've never actually heard of a phosphor brush causing any wear to a crown. Compared to a tight fitting hot lump of copper and lead passing through it 850+ m/sec, I can't see it having any effect at all.

Why's that?

A few reasons

1, potential damage to the crown
2, returning crud back to the bore
3, actually not that efficient
4, won't work with JB paste

My view is that it better to have something than nothing - I usually take one out when I can't take a rod. Just for clarification, I would never use one as a part of the regular cleaning process.

What was the biggest cause of loss of accuracy with the issued 303 rifles?
Cord wear at the muzzle caused by soldiers allowing the pull-through to rub against the end of the barrel...

I fairly recently asked a respected RFD about boresnakes and his reply was.
"They are about as much use as second hand bog roll-if you is in the s***, then use one......."
Needless to say, I walked out of the shop with a new Tipton rod instead.

I would hope that an owner would take considerably more care of the crown than a squadie who wasn't following cleaning instructions.
heres an extract from the K31 manual concerning cleaning with pull-throughs, the Swiss Army considered it ideally a two man exercise.
