If you force the extractor claw over the rim of the cartridge you will be bending beyond its intended design limits and eventually it will crack and break. That's why Parker Hale put in a shallow sprung "magazine" in their single shot target rifles rather than a solid loading block, so that the round could still slip under the extractor claw from below. I suppose they could have if they wanted to put a loading platform in an alter the bolt so as to be push fed but then it would have negated one of the strong points of the K98 action which is the strength of the extraction system.

Quite probably. As far as I know all our club Mauser-actions are at least 30 years old and still on their original extractors...
