All the ARs are much the same, SGC, Bradley, Valkyrie and Lantac can configure to your specific requirements. Buy a stock AR like an LMT or Spikes Tactical and you'll probably want to change some parts at some point sooner rather than later so if its serious competition you are interested in then specifying exactly what you want will probably save you money and time in the long run.

The two most important things on the AR to get right from the off are a decent trigger and a free float forend, without these you are going to struggle to shoot as well as you could.
  • Triggers are a personal choice but the top shooters use two stage and considered amongst the best is the Geissele Hi-Speed Service Rifle Trigger which can be set to the minimum of 4.5 Lbs to meet the weight requirements for NRA Service Optic Class.

A free float forend is needed so that you can use a sling without putting any pulling force on the barrel, these come in many shapes and sizes but the simpler the better as a multitude of rails is not needed and just adds weight.
Most barrels will shoot better than most people can and the targets in CSR have generous scoring areas so keeping all your shots in the 5 ring is not down to how tightly the barrel groups its down to how well you can hold it steady in the aiming area on target.

If £1800 is your budget does that include an Optic and mount as well? If it does you'll be a bit limited but the current flavour of the month are Vortex Optics which look to be doing quite well and come with a good warranty. x4.5 is the maximum power for Service Optic and Vortex do a couple of nice low powered scopes and relatively cheap mounts, however, with optics and mounts you can pay more for them than the gun itself.

Best bet is to try before you buy, if you are close to Bisley then get the necessary SSC Card and come along to the first CSR Winter League Match in October. If you wanted to shoot and did not have a rifle then one can easily be provided and there will be many available for you to look at. There will also be either one two or three RFDs there who could sort you out and provide advice, timescales and costs.

When buying try to avoid those that ask for a deposit and cannot give a guaranteed delivery date.

I did laugh at the photo of the LMT MWS there. Doesn't inspire much confidence in the seller. ;)

Those T handle equipped LMT's are no use in comps, you need Bradders to make you one with a side charger conversion.

Great advice especially from John.. I have a budget of £2000 if Including scope/mounts.
You mention the 4.bowl scope limit. Is this the most popular type of csr comp? I see some people with irons and others with longer range optics. So many options. I think coming and watching a comp will be 1 on my to do list... I am speaking to Mr Bradley next week as he responded to my email quickly and was polite and helpful! I also think fate may be involved as I am also Mr Bradley!!

Paul,
4.bowl magnification is the most allowed in Service optic class, hence the popularity. You can use a longer magnification in Service Optic but it must stay at 4.bowl for the whole of the match.

In Practical Optic class there is no restriction on magnification or bipods etc.

I trust you will join us on the 5th October at Bisley??

Yes I would definitely love to come and see how it is done. The only experience I have had other than plinking with an AR was the falling plates. I was a last minute entrant so it was a bit manic to say the least... thoroughly enjoyable though!!
