Ok, Vortex seems like a good place to start. Any model in particular? I'll mostly be making holes in paper at various distances at Bisley.

Depends on your budget........I make holes in paper at Bisley once a fortnight, 600 and 1000yds, and I rarely have the mag higher than 15x. The 6.5-20 is compact, light, very sharp and the V-plex wide reticle is great for paper punching. And it has a lifetime warranty, even if you accidentally break it.
In fact, I just bought another one for the girlfriend...........

I'm a recent new owner of a Remington 700 sat in a manners stock. Scope wise I have borrowed a fox tactical off of a friend. It has really surprised me in terms of clarity and performance. The fox scopes are rebranded hakkos it seems. I have also tried a falcon optics menace which I was very impressed with and for the price (about 230 quid) you can't go wrong. The rail and rings are from third eye tactical. Very good quality but not ridiculously expensive. I'm very happy with the set up so far.

But then, I'm of the opinion that you don't need to spend a kings ransom on glass if you're just punching paper.........

I concur, Riflecraft are most helpful, just purchased this, for my Steyr Aug:
