See article below from 2006, the rest as they say is history!
The UK's Defence Procurement Agency (DPA) has shortlisted companies to supply its new sniper rifle, which is expected to replace Accuracy International's (AI's) L96 sniper rifle.
AI, Blaser Jagdwaffen (represented by Beechwood Equipment of the UK) and PGW Defence Technologies Inc Timberwolf (backed by Colt Canada Sales and Service) made the final shortlist to supply the weapon.
The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has expressed an interest in replacing the 7.62 mm L96 weapon with a .338-cal rifle.
The DPA is also looking for a sniper rifle night sight to accompany the new weapon. Decisions on both systems are expected by the end of the first quarter of 2007.
An MoD spokesman toldJane's: "There is a competition for a sniper system and trials of proposed weapons and optical solutions are currently taking place in Yuma, Arizona.
The competition is due to close early next year."
Weapons in the running include Blaser Jagdwaffen's Long-Range Sniper (LRS) Tactical II system. The Australian Defence Force has already purchased the LRS as part of its Long-Range Sniper Rifle Capability programme.
The LRS, which is also available in 5.56 mm cal and .300-cal, fires the .338 Lapua Magnum round and is effective up to 1,600 m.
Blaser claims it has been accurate at up to 2,000 m.
A spokesman for Blaser toldJane's: "Currently the Blaser LRS Tactical II is being short-listed for trials conducted by a number of armed forces within NATO."
Timberwolf has offered the MoD its .338 Lapua Magnum system and industry sources said AI has put forward one of its .338 AW rifle systems.
Along with AI's 7.62 mm L96 sniper rifle, the British Army also uses the L115A1 long-range rifle, which has an effective range of over 1,100 m and fires an .338 cal bullet
