Informal shooting works for me. I haven't really got the time or money to compete at the mo.
To be honest I love shooting my service rifles but when it comes to 600,900,1000 I have to resort to the Tikka T3.
The T3 can do 1000yds but I must stress I don't reload, so I use factory 155gn. I know if I did I could get better results on paper but don't even have time for that.
Mate, enjoy it for what it is. If Factory is what you shoot then do that to the best of your ability and enjoy it.

I have been shooting all sorts over my lifetime both operationally and instructional and I now shoot F/TR etc.

I can honestly say I have never heard so many blame the equipment more. Where more often than not its lack of ability/range time/mistakes or just pure bad luck. Not the rifle or the ammo.

That said I have just had the back end of mine re built so it stays aligned and rigid and it has made a huge difference to its ability to hold groups and elevations.

One of the best there is uses what is essentially a no frills set up, but is consistent, talented and can actually read the wind.

I totally agree!

For instance a couple of weeks ago I had equal scores while shooting my Mosin PU at 300 to others shooting TR!
All I want and what I do you is just rock up, lay down and shoot to the best I can do that day. So really a out of the box accurate rifle will do. I don't need to go down the custom route as I just don't shoot enough. I think for me spending bucket loads isn't for me, even though I do like getting a vball!!

I had a .308 Savage F/tr for a while. On a still day it was boringly accurate with a Berger hybrid load that I worked up for it. Anything that missed the Vbull was shooter error.
Sadly shooting Ftr class left me cold so moved the rifle on.
Try one before you spend your money, I hated the stock and upgraded (some would say downgraded) to a chaote varmint stock. I really like the grip position on these stocks, gives really good trigger control.

Any Plus 1 for the Savage!

The more I hear the more I would put it on my shopping list!
If I know the rifle can do it, and do it well! I'm half way there!
The other half is down to me to build on!
I don't think that they are a overly expensive rifle either. I'm in no rush to purchase as we are coming to the end of the season so should hopefully be able to pick up a second hand one.
We shall only see.

The Savage is more than good enough for informal long range work, and as the two 9th places I've had recently show, it is at least competitive in the higher echelons as well, so I think it fits your needs quite well.

I will disagree and agree with Maggot, you do need a very high quality, working setup to compete at the top of F/TR. He's right that a lot of the blame tends to fall on the gun, and mostly it's not deserved. Equally, most people tend not to blame themselves for anything, so it's to be expected. And I think when the limelight isn't on them, they'll probably accept fault where it's due. That said, these guys and girls can shoot, so they are often not making it up!

One way or another though, if you're talking Savage, have a chat with Stuart Anselm at Osprey - does a lot of work with them.

Thanks for that. I will call Stuart at Osprey to have a chat at some point to pick his brain. So far I do think the Savage is a viable package. For what I paid for my Tikka of course with scope is about the same price as the Savage FTR new.

I have the .223 F/TR, I'm really pleased with it and useing it out to 1000 yards with 80gr A-Max is a doddle. I'm really liking the floating bolt face and think the action is really smooth. Go for it, you won't be disappointed. I cut my stock to have an adjustable cheekpiece as the plastic ones supplied are S#%te.

Sound good. A happy customer. I think I'm going to look very seriously into getting the .308 before the start of next season. It just seems to tick all the boxes for me. :goodjob:
