To be honest that's a bit crappy of them.

They/You should have taken the site offline wth an "under maintenance" page displayed whilst the data was backed up and imported to the new system, the files copied to the new server, and repointed.

It could have had an IP filter (to redirect to the maintenance page) so you could test the website from your IP to make sure it's all working and then release the filter when all is working.

No Dataloss and no cross posting to the old database whilst DNS is updating for people... :/

I totally agree, I did ask them not to loose data and then again when the site was back up if there was any data loss and the two databases were compared and they were the same so as far as they were concerned nothing was lost. However that is not reality with a forum.

I am confident there has been no cross posting, old site was gone when new site emerged.

For you... The TTL on full-bore.co.uk is 4 hours... which means theres a 4 hour window where someone could have been using a cached lookup of the address for full-bore.co.uk - been taken to the old IP address when the new site had been made live.

I understand not wanting to cause disruption for users by keeping both running, but with a forum, its just not logical. someone can be posting to the old one because their DNS record is still (as far as the cache is concerned) valid after the new site has been made live and the DNS has changed but not propagated.

At least turning off the old site when the new site has been made live would stop any chance of that happening, but again, it seems like the database was restored to a much earlier point anyway.

The process outlined above would mitigate any loss of data in that respect, although the site would be "down for maintenance" for a while whilst backing up the dataset and transferring and restoring to the new server but that could have been done, tested the site was working, confirmed it, DNS updated and turn the maintenance page off on the new server only so only people would be shown the maintenance page until their DNS was propagated.

If it was planned accordingly the TTL could be brought down to 15 minutes or so at least 4 hours prior to the changeover and maximum time to display maintenance page after DNS change would be 15 minutes...

I'm sure it's not a big deal to you, or them that a little bit of data was lost, but for me, working in the industry, it would be unacceptable to lose someones data in such a manor. and comes down to bad practice/procedures...

Yes if you are in the know then the service would be unacceptable but the majority of people are not up to speed with these kind of issues and the providers know this. So if your forum resurfaces several hours late with some bits missing and the price is right most people just accept it.

For the roughly £400 I recall that was raised last month, per year, I wouldn't say it's acceptable...

Also, I'm not sure if the attachment uploads folder has the right CHMOD settings... I tried uploading an attachment a couple of minutes ago and it couldn't write to the folder :/

I know, it is all down to the nameserver being changed. It will work soon.

I am very happy with the hosting of this forum. They are always there when I need help.

I have said in the past that if people can find the same hosting elsewhere for less money then please let me know.
