Think they are T55/T64/T72 tanks, T34 were WW2 vintage but would still like one of each.

And with the Sherman and the Tiger in WW2 for example it was quantity over quality, same with the T-34 which often came out of the factory door unpainted and literally straight into combat.If you had hordes of T-64s or T-72s pouring through the Fulda Gap the last thing you would be thinking is thank God my Chieftain is screwed together a bit better!.

The only reason those tanks are all still sat there is because after the break up of the Soviet Union and Ukraines independance the Kharkov repair depot came under Ukrainian control and they had no money to continue the refurb programme.The majority of the tanks are T-64, T-72 and T-80 variants and before the fall of the Soviet Union the plant was overhauling 55 engines a month and upgrading around 60 tanks a month.

Chuck.....I was talking to a gentleman that shoots at my club sometime last year who used to go to Eastern Russia to hunt every year.He told me that on one particular trip the guide needed ammunition so they jumped into an old UAZ and drive for around three hours down a dirt Road through a forest until they come to a clearing in the forest with a set of gates behind which were three large warehouse buildings.On the gate were two very bored looking guards and a manky dog....the guide approached the two guards, words were said and "vodka tokens" exchanged and the gates were opened and they were lead to one of the warehouse buildings.On opening the doors it became apparent that the warehouse was stacked floor to ceiling with crates of ammunition of various calibres and apparently the other two were the same......Anyway he said a dozen crates were loaded into the back of the UAZ and with a cheery wave they were on there way back to the shooting lodge!, apparently the guide had been doing this for years and the guards were only too happy to exchange ammo for vodka tokens!!!.

Snayperskya: Thanks for that - sounds a great place to be I wonder if Thomas Cook do Russia......sounds like a fun trip doing all that....

I know someone who had booked a short break to Russia.

When he found out he and his family had to go to the embassy in person to meet the biometric security requirements for a visa he cancelled the trip.
