Started off with a Caldwell back bag (Cordura), then a Armageddon "Brick" bean-bag which I love. Also have an Armageddon "X-Wing" which is also very good.

My current bag of choice is a Seb leather bad from Fox Firearms which is filled with what feels to be half of a volcano it's so heavy.

I use a Caldwell bag filled with used tuimbler medium.

Tried various ones - ended up making my own. I found the Caldwell ones were like egg timers, leaked everywhere.

You say that like it is a bad thing! I have my bag on the bench every time I zero at NCB. :)

Biggest issue with rear bags is they sit incredibly high which means you have to raise the front of the rifle which can lead to instability,

I'm still no closer to deciding on a rear bag. some interesting choices.

Tell me, what should I be looking for with a rear-bag. Smooth so the rifle can slide back on it, or hard so that the rifle does not move on the bag, or somewhere between?

I like the idea of a squeeze sock provided the amount of squeeze can be replicated. some of these with draw strings seem like a good idea to vary but hold squeeze, but these are not smooth like some of the eared offerings.

Agh. so confusing.

I just want a repeatable surface for shooting consistently from a bench :'(

OK - there are basically two ways to shoot a rested rifle - or should I say adjust a rested rifle.

Undoubtedly, a proper Cordura-eared back bag like the Edgewood is as good as it gets. The butt sits rock-solid between the ears - which keep the rifle recoiling in a straight line. All adjustment of aim is done on the front rest.

The other way is using 'squashy' back bag. This can be just as accurate but involves more input from the shooter. All adjustment of aim is done by squeezing the bag and holding it perfectly still during firing.

If you need a set-up purely for ammo testing then the benchrester's bunny-eared bag is best.

For accurate rapid firing, the squashy back bag takes it.

Of course, to take full advantage of the bunny-eared set-up a solid concrete bench is essential whereas you can happily shoot the squashy bag off grass with no detriment.
