A Marlin or Winchester in .357Mag is a fine rifle and immense fun to shoot however it is not a Fox rifle/cartridge combination in my opinion, not unless you are dealing with Fox on an up close and personal basis such as 100 yards or less, beyond this I think you are going to struggle.

Buy a .357Mag under lever for fun and find yourself a 22-250 with some 50grain Vmax and if you see a Fox just point the gun at it, pull the trigger and pick the bits up.

See now all this advice has been given.
I thought I knew what i was talking about, well i do have a fair idea for the most part.
You guys are confusing me, im wanting a center fire rifle .233 seems like a fair shout i think, but now I'm starting to wonder if a .22 rim fire is now the best choice.
I'm also going to look into a range shoot at Katterick.
My main priority was to secure permission on private land, I've done that.
Then move on from there, i used to shoot at an in door gun range in Redcar ( North East ) not sure if that's there anymore.

Was it the one on the Race course at Redcar if so that was Guisborough gun club. Its not there any more. Or was it the Wilton Gun Club at the recreation Club. That's were I started shooting but unfortunately that was shut down and demolished. The nearest indoor range to you if you are in Cleveland is Hartlepool rifle and pistol club.
Go with the .223 is my advice cheap and it will do the job.
Or you could try these guys most of them are original members of Guisborough gun club the facility is about ready to open.

Yes mate Guisborough gun club.
Shot pistols there litraly weeks before the ban, went back years later and shot the RF then didn't bother going anymore as it was closing down.
Thanks for the link though, I'll check it out.

I was a member of Great Broughton Wood Pigeon club as well.
Shot RF and shot gun with them for years.
A few of the guisborough gun club lads hung out there, top blokes lost touch with them all, bloody Shame to be honest.
And yea I'm still in the Cleveland area.

If you want to shoot clays there is a walk in clay pigeon shooting facility at Hartlepool. It's pretty reasonable cost wise. They do tuition as well.

Update.

I've been to see the land owner today and gotten written permission for a .22 rim fire and a .223
I've taken your advice on the .223 thank you for that.

However the land owner was raving about the 17 HMR Rifle he had just purchased ( CZ bolt action ) he offered me a mag and said here what do you think so i shot a 17 HMR and to be honest I'm thinking of changing the permission from the .22 and add the 17 HMR i loved it, a tad loud but very much worth the trade off in my opinion. seemed a very flat round and a very fast round.
Pondering what to do.
