More bloody metric confusion, mils are also units of volume short for milliliters I have been told.

I wouldn't know how much 70mm is anyway.

"Always keep your muzzle pointing at your target" is a good one, personally when I RCO I say that the rifle muzzle should never come above the horizontal when chambering a live round, when a live round is chambered and when unchambering a live round and the rifle should always be pointing at the target, now people get that with no confusion.

Strictly, the 70 mil rule applies on Limited Danger Area ranges built to the standards set by the UK Ministry of Defence and published in JSP403 vol 2, available online. The derivation is that a bullet of the type the range is designed for (7.62 NATO) fired at that elevation or less will land within the confines of the danger area. As such it's a safety rule of fairly limited application, but has the great advantage that if applied on NDA ranges or field firing areas it also results in a safe outcome. Thus, it is a popular standard to apply because it will prevent escape of a direct fire shot in nearly all cases.

And the mil isnt a metric unit.

Millilitres are metric, but the abbreviation is ml not mil

surely the fact it can be a miliradian and not just a radian makes it metric?

To be pedantic, Mils and Milliradians are two different units of angle.

There are 6400 Nato Mils in 360 degrees

There are 6283.19 Milliradians in 360 degrees.

1 Mil is 1m at 1km

Both units are dimensionless.

Russia & China both opted for 6000 Mils.
NATO went for 6400 Mils because you could divide the 8 points of the compass more easily in 6400.
