I bought a spare gun safe. Bit Heath Robinson but very over-engineered.
Turns out to be a perfect size to take the 4l & 9l sized Really Useful Boxes.

Allows me to drag out whatever I need, keeps everything calibre specific, the 4l box is IDEAL for shotgun cartridges, etc.
No lost capacity due to shelving

We were discussing shotgun cartridges only yesterday, I have around 1000 in a locked ammunition crate under my desk in the workshop plus more than I care to think about in the Armoury however I spotted a couple sitting on the top of the radio on the Vikings desk (As you do) In theory you can stack them on a shelf in the kitchen and I usually have a box readily to hand on the gun rack in the workshop 'Just in case' (Impromptu invites out etc.) I also have hundreds if not thousands of old paper cartridges which I intend to put in a printers case or similar as a display at some point.

Or if starting from scratch, get Brattonsound to supply a cabinet with shelves already fitted! I have had one for many years.

I kept my old 9-gun pistol cabinet which makes a good ammo safe, CF ammo in the bottom, .22 in the topbox

I picked that one up for £60 second hand, its supposed to be a two gun safe but in reality it would be a tight squeeze for two.
Would work fine if you just had a shotgun I suppose. Anyway, for the money I'm happy and its plenty big enough for ammo storage.

Ovenpaa - I have near two thousand shotgun shells and have the same problem of where to store them. At the moment they are stacked up in my office which is not ideal. Although it does have a lock..
I haven't seen a paper shotgun cartridge for years! Where did you get them from?

ArcofZen - I had a few then someone I know moved out of the country and gave me a couple of large boxes of loose cartridges, them someone spotted them and gave me some more and I have even more coming within the next week or two. When people know you collect them they tend to find some more.

I did get as far as sorting them all out neatly on the floor however the Lurcher Puppy from Hell turned up at that point and sent them scattering so they went back in the boxes again. I will sort them out properly one day :)

Can I ask what and how many fixings you have used for those and what the wall construction is. I would not normally trust* the typical four expansion fittings to hang a 50kg cabinet plus guns or 40kg of cartridges on a wall. They may support it but just 0.5mm of movement would, over time, increase and potentially cause a problem.

* It might be me and my instinct to slightly over engineer and reduce and potential chance of failure.

It seems weird to me that they're "floating" above the skirting board. Mine all bolt to the wall and to the floor.

At least you haven't started collecting cats, we all know how that ends!
I assume shotgun cartridges can't simply be posted? I'd love a box of paper shells. Can you still buy them?

Polchraine - As I mentioned before, those cabinets would be impossible to re/move. The wall is solid concrete block and I used 12mm anchor bolts from memory. And being from a trade background I like to think I know what I'm doing

I can't bolt to the floor without risking going through the underfloor heating, and it means easier cleaning!

Not doubting you, just that the shear force of potentially well over 100kg is significant. Pulling them directly out would be near impossible but very slight vertical movement as load and unload could have an effect especially as the CoG is 200mm out from the wall.

My walls are 20N blocks and either 12mm or 16mm expansion/anchor bolts - I still did not trust them! and have mine on and screwed to the floor too. Fortunately for me the underfloor heating is not in the room - the manifold and large amounts of pipework are in the room below with minimal floor/ceiling insulation so there will be an upward flow.
