Question from a target shooter..

Do you already shoot on other land? If not I suspect it will be more rigorous as I assume they will want to be sure you are safe shooting game, rather than targets in a controlled enviroment.

At the moment I dont have land on my ticket but have 40 years + on and off experience of shooting over land with air rifles/as a guest with firearms etc
I dont know how I would go about proving this or indeed how they would deem me safe to shoot over land also. I have shot in the company of the land owner and also in the company of my referee on the same land in the past.
I can see this being not as straight forward as first envisaged. The land owner just told me to call them and tell them his address and postcode and everything will be OK

Can you get references from people you have shot with. I doubt it is just a matter of adding the land. My FAC stipulates target shooting as a member of my first club only.

Time to speak to your FEO methinks..

I don't imagine getting a specified piece of land added to your ticket will be a problem but I very much doubt you will be given an 'open' ticket that will allow you to shoot on any land given permission until you've shot your specified land for a while

Normally, on first instance of being issued land, you'll end up with wording that clears you on any land, provided it's been cleared by the chief of police.
The act of getting cleared for land is all in the permission, so if someones given you permission to shoot, and it's been "deemed suitable" for the calibre of firearm by the chief of police (or his lackies on his behalf) then they just need to add the wording.

When people talk about an open ticket, what they're referring to is that the wording changes from deemed suitable by the chief of police, to being deemed suitable by the holder of the firearm certificate. The onus on safety on the location that you're shooting is put in the hands of the shooter, rather than the chief of police.

Generally they won't do that on a first time submission (although there are probably exceptions somewhere in the country).

I believe that as a firearm holder, all they need to do is to check the land, or clear the land for the calibre of firearm and all your background checks are already taken care of. I have been informed previously that it's a simple change by the firearms staff (WM) with a very quick turnaround for existing FAC holders.

Unfortunately, I'm still after a piece of illusive land to shoot over to have the condition added to my FAC :(

Spoke to fiery Fiona at Wakefield today And this is how it is with West Yorks.
I need to shoot over land with someone using their guns not mine. They then have to put in writing to plod that I'm safe.
I have to send in FAC with permission letter and they will then check land to see if it has been passed for calibres that I want to shoot.

I'd suggest that needing to shoot over land with someone and their guns is an unreasonable request.

Whose to say the person granting you permission even has guns. You might be there to kerb a problem that they do not have the tools to do themselves.

I was under the impression that permission to shoot is all you need.

I suppose he can't shoot over land with his own guns as the target shooting condition on his own ticket wouldn't allow it?

Essex like to see a letter from a fellow shooter saying they have been with you and you are safe over land .

It's not just about the land, it's about the shooter as well. The Police are asking for someone with an existing open/semi-open FAC to go round with you and certify that you can shoot safely. Quite honestly that doesn't sound too onerous to me and I'm sure you'll get a volunteer from this thread.
