So what does a slot for a 308 allow you to buy?
A .308 or 7.62x51 firearm.

I have heard of some RFDs that won't sell you a 7.62NATO chambered rifle on that (.308) slot, but metric/imperial nomenclature for the same cartridge is generally said to be accepted.
I assume .308 Winchester?

I have 7.62/.308 on my ticket and have recently bought a 7.62x39 rifle.

My FEO advised that if I wasnt exactly sure of which of the 7.62 chamberings I wanted, this was the way forward.

Surely if you have a slot for a 7.62/.308 rifle and then get a 7.62x39 rifle to fill that slot you'd struggle to get 7.62x39 ammunition.....as they are completely different chamberings and surely if you were in possession of 7.62x39 ammunition but had 7.62/.308 on your certificate surely that's an offence?.

Not really I had a slot for a 308 I bought a 308 Norma Magnum I can buy the 308 ammo
7.62 slot bought a 7.62 x 39 I can buy 7.62 ammo at change of address they added the detail of the chambering

I’ve done the same with 22cf that gave me more choice of rifle.

No not an offence, and absolutely no problem buying any 7.62 or .308 calibre rifle unless your certificate stipulates and restricts you to a particular cartridge as some forces occasionally do.

I wouldn't expect that after a dealer has sold me a rifle, that I then wouldn't be able to buy ammunition for that rifle?

The ammo seller is going to see that i have authority to possess 7.62 ammunition and have had a 7.62x39 rifle entered on my ticket by another dealer.

If I do run in to difficulty i guess I'll ask my FEO to have a word?

This is really useful. Thank you for each and every comments. On the basis of what folks on here have said, I'm going to put my variation in and ask for 7.92 and 6.5 and see what they say. If they tell me I need to be more specific then I will have to do that.

I'll let the board know what happens!

You could also simplify things and just ask for 8,0mm and 6,5mm.

For the record, as an RFD I would not transfer a 7,62x39 or 54R to someone with a 7,62/.308 as, in my opinion they are different things. Equally I would not transfer ammunition across either, regardless of the policies of other people.

That is exactly what I was thinking and to my mind is correct.Every time I have purchased a 7.62x54r or 7.62x39 rifle (and there has been a few!) the dealer has asked to see either 7.62x54r or 7.62x39 specified on my FAC.

I believe that the 7.5x55 Swiss uses .308 bullets but I wouldn't expect to get one on a 7.62/.308 slot!.

I know everyone is different and perhaps it's just me but I find it odd that people don't actually have a pretty good idea of what actual calibre/chambering/rifle they want to buy.I have two spare slots, one for a 7.62x54r and one for 7.62x39 as I already know I want another Mosin (preferably an Imperial M91) and another AK variant.

With 7.62/308 I agree but if it was just 7.62?
