I believe the larger diameter barrel started with the serial number prefix of 581. I love my old stainless 80s vintage Mini 14. I installed a combo muzzlebrake and better front sight unit that seems to dampen the barrel whip somewhat. For at least the first 50 rounds it is putting the shots into the 10 ring at 100 yds and is sufficient to hit the steel plate at 400 yds (20 series knows the steel plate!).
I started with the 180 series back in the mid 70s and stepped up to the stainless in the 80s. The sights are horrible but that can be corrected with a Tech Sight rear and the M14 style front.
Best of luck with the Mini!
