The Viking shoots with a 24X 'scope, it was chosen purely for the quality of glass, I shoot with a 16X on my AI, chosen for the glass, and a 42X 'scope on my F Class rifle chosen for it's magnification and I am not impressed with it and usually run it at lower magnification. If the conditions allow it you can wind the magnification up and some people are running 60-80X magnification these days but it is not every day you can use such power.
I personally believe quality of glass is every bit as important as magnification, if not more so and I would happily put my 12X up against 'scopes four times more powerful at longer distances, the important thing is to peer through a load of different 'scopes and find one that suits your eyes, your shooting discipline/style and most importantly your budget.

60 to 80x that's nuts David!!
I totally agree if it's a clear lens. I looked though the EB sniper 10x42 and was very impressed. I need to get something that isn't top dollar and also so my dad can get a few on target at 1000yds! I've been checking out the Fox scopes and Hawke 30 TAC! The scope I have on the Musgrave is 3-9mag and it's on it's limit at 600yds for me so god knows how the old man would get on! I reckon he would be fine with around 20x shooting at 1000.

Martin,
Look for the IOR 24X, I think it is 6-24X magnification, 35mm tube, Schott glass and strong enough to club a baby seal to death with. I defy anyone to find better glass for even twice the price. The good news is they are not that fashionable so you could well get a used one at a seriously bargain price.

IOR are made by IOR, they used to be imported by Border Barrels.
Details of the range here
http://www.valdada.com/
Do not be put off by the prices, bargains can be had on second hand ones.

I'm after an IOR myself, not seen them for sale this side of the pond (apart from a 6x42 on eBay at the moment, not at all what I'm after!).

Nah, not so sure there are any around these days, Border Barrels stopped being the importer and I am not sure what happened with the brand in this country after they stopped selling them.
Honestly, if you are after a top quality not so much money scope then IOR is worth looking at. Underrated. Need a well built rifle to mount it on though, not one of those skinny ones.

They're for sale in various different shops in America, the only problem is that hardly anyone will ship to the UK :(
I need to find a friendly American willing to buy one for me and send it over!
