.223/5.56 under £2000

If you want one sooner than later highly recommend a Bradley Arms if you are willing to wait then Lantac as the promised US sourced Raven seems to be taking a long time to reach these shores. The Bradley Arms l have is one of the most smoothest straight pull actions l have used and even with the relatively short barrel is more than accurate especially knocking down fig 11's at Sennybridge.

Alternatively go Russkie and consider a SP Arsenal (Bulgarian) from Rusmilitary, the action is not so smooth but works well enough.

With the regard to a separate section for castrated semi-auto centre fires l will accept the majority decision and agree that it should be a Straight Pull section to include Lever release and MARS actions and any other action that is acceptable to our legislators.

I am full of a cold know and a bit grumpy so if the Mods can arrange to have the section in place at their earliest convenience but no longer than 7 days l would be most grateful as would the other supporters as this would make us all very happy and me less grumpy.

Whilst I'm not an AR kind of guy a shooting mate of mine has a LanTac in 300 BLK and I have to say it is very nice to shoot, very well put together and bloody accurate!.

So these AR black rifles or what ever you want to call them what are you using them for what is the attraction.

I would have thought it was obvious - they are firearms and you can use them for whatever you're authorised for - from targets to pest control...

CSR

The AR in this instance is usually as basic and as reliable as possible. You can adapt it as much as you like within the rules for your class, but you dont need a black rifle to compete and competition is at all levels where the very best can be multiple queens medal winners, one of the few high master holders outside of the US (sorry if this is wrong Bill) or just bloody good shots like Mr B and many others. At the lower end satisfaction comes from slowly moving up or beating your last score. You do not need to be Linford to compete but it inspired me to lose a couple of stone and get out and about tabbing and on the bike.

Mark Bradley is hell bent on coming back to his original standard after eye surgery has caused him to go away and learn to shoot left handed. He shot a 300 match score in the Imperial of 149 exe 150 left handed. Inspiration enough for most.

Take a look at the NRA facebook page, more than enough explanation there. We have all sorts, boys and girls, youngsters and the more senior (I think Martin at 70 odd is probably the most inspirational older shooter we have) and we all have a scream. Success wont come overnight but you can see progress.

There are more than enough ways to screw up but still go home smilling without the need to blame the wrong kind of air.

At least one competition a year throughout the winter is run on the ETR range at Ash (usually drags a few part timers out of the woodpile).

If a black rifle upsets you but you still want to take part, bung a bipod on a remmy 700 and shoot practical class (ladyboys the lot of them ).

Even if you dont give a toss about competing there is some food for thought with Courses of fire as they are all in there.

The biggest problem most people have is that unlike many disciplines CSR is quite hectic but well organized. It depends on the shooters knowing what they are doing to keep things moving and the matches are quite complex. This can put people off on their first match but it soon becomes automatic and very enjoyable. We try very hard to lead people by the nose and encourage....unless you screw up in a safety way then you get stripped naked and fed to the sheep.

We also have all sorts of side shows. Frankie Potholing, Bradders mud skiing, Apres Bog snorkeling, Brass wrangling (Dan the man) and a few other s*** and giggles. Maggot and Airbrush are entertainment in their own right

Oh yes, and the odd bit of cammo (particularly waterproofs) is allowed and we do shoot at figure targets. Hell we even shoot outside in positions other than prone with a bipod and a bag...well...apart from the PO ladyboys but we love them really

Can I suggest that while the blackouts, whispers, 6.8SPCs, Grendels etc are nice and slightly exotic, IF you are considering shooting in certain classes, they may well exclude you (particularly from CSR/SO which is 7.62x51 NATO/.308 win or 5.56x45 NATO/.223 Rem only). Also bear in mind any after purchase servicing you may need both in terms of reputation and locality, and what is popular in that class. Dont forget some of these people have been shooting these things for decades and will have worked out the route of least resistance and the most economic.

Jury is out on lever releases but reports are suggesting they are potentially less accurate than their straight-pull (in effect bolt action) cousins and also much more likely to play up when you need them to behave. And good luck finding your brass afterwards as well.

I use all my SP's in a mix of competitive and non competitive target shooting and don't get to hung up on precision accuracy as l leave this to my bolt actions (with me not that precise either). I suppose the main attraction is the relative ease of very low level gunsmithing (l am not a gunsmith and not claiming to be). I have a penchant for red dots and low power optics and like trying various makes as well as diffent hand guards buttstocks etc.

I will own up to overt " accessorising" in the past which is phase we all go through but now prefer a stripped back look. I suppose to analogise it's the difference between custom car and classic car essentially the same genre but a different preference.

I use my 9mm SGC in open gallery usually coming top three in my class.

If l was younger l would like to try 3 gun in the States and have done Mini-rifle here and found it entertaining.

For me shooting is a combined hobby/sport and as such a forum like this is a god send as it provides great info from its contributors.

I think with the AR style rifle and l include the Ruger Pecision and even the new Tikka tactical is helping to keep the sport alive especially supporting the dealers. So some acknowledgement of this is far overdue and not to be blatantly ignored as it now seems to be.

The list that i managed to put together is North West Custom Parts ,Lantac, Bradley Arms, www.valkyrierifles.net, Southern gun company . I would have thought 2000 was a bit tight though.
