Badger, I have the AR15 in the Grendel with a bull barrel (semi auto) and it is very accurate out to a 1000 yards (as far as I've shot with it). I'd say it is one of the most accurate and flat shooting rifles out of all my rifles. As for the .50 Beowulf I have never owned one but I have shot one many times as my son has one. I've only ever fired it out to 300 yards and it has been a very accurate round (under an inch group). My son has shot it out to 800 yards and says it is still accurate out to that distance

Having never shot the UK neutered version of the AR I really can't compare but I don't believe you will notice any difference in accuracy between the semi auto and the neutered version.

I will ask him how widespread a practice it was, I certainly know he did it to the SVD he carried.He did tell me the furthest he dropped a "target" was approx 1100m with two shots.

On semi and full auto operating weapons, there are none that begin rearward movement of the bolt whilst the bullet is still in the barrel. All utilise some form of locking or another that keeps the bolt firmly closed until the bullet exits and pressure has dropped to a safe level before opening. Even the humble .22lr has the rearward movement of the simple blow back action retarded by the strength of the spring alone until pressure in the barrel is safe.

Modern guns with quality barrels, regardless their genre are generally capable of far, far greater accuracy than their owners can attain. My old SGC Speedmaster remains one of the most accurate rifles I've ever owned.

Even on long barreled rifles where the gas port is relatively close to the chamber in relation to the end of the barrel?.

Makes no difference at all. Actions remain locked until the pressure has dropped to a safe level and this is when the bullet has left the barrel.

Badger, if making a choice between the two I would always choose the Grendel both for the reasons I have already stated and also that it is a lot darned cheaper to reload for.

The table at the bottom of this article http://www.gunsandammo.com/uncategorize ... -good-for/ gives you some idea of what the round is capable of velocity wise. I think a subsonic load in Beowulf could be fun...
