357Mag? - that's plain wrong. Good idea, but just ... wrong.

.45 Colt & .44 Spl. are also wrong - originals were not chambered in those calibres.

I know, but at least they're both contemporary cartridges (if you regard 44Spl as a mildly improved 44 Russian, or even a modern equivalent of 44 Henry). Both fire heavy bullets fairly slowly, rather than being flat-shooting magnums in an old-fashioned gun.

Obviously modern materials mean it's fine in repros, and 357 is just as much fun as anything else, but "spirit of the original" and all that...
If you are looking for "spirit of the original" then three of the four original chamberings for the Winchester Model 1873 are available from Uberti. There's no need to substitute something that is not right just because it may seem a little easier to reload (it isn't anyway).

I've got a bog standard Uberti 1873 Carbine in .44-40. Very accurate rifle, even with the "minute of buffalo" sights. Occasionally get an action "hang up" (ISTR the cartridge lifter goes too far up and the lever won't close) but mostly when working the action empty (I suspect the weight of a cartridge on the lifter drops it back down). Won't feed SWC bullets well. Nice little rifle found for a good price.

aaarggh that's not good to hear :o

Was planning on get a '73 myself soon, don't fancy waiting a year!!

I'm going over to Texas in a few months time.....wonder how easy or not it would be to bring one back with me if they are all over there?

I agree with SimG's last comment regarding allocation of Uberti firearms to the UK. I have the 1873 special sporting rifle in 32-20, 38-40 and 44 spl, all 24" barrels; they are very smooth in operation and accurate, at least up to 50 metres. Foolishly, having had my arms twisted, I let the 44-40 and 45 Colt go to friends.

I bought this today, made by Rossi. Its a 38/357. Seems to work just fine, shot a bunnie with it this afternoon and will give it a workout at the range this evening.
Ime hoping to have a lot of fun with it.

The Rossi's are based on the Winchester 1892 designed by John Moses Browning.

I am tempted to ask for one of my under levers to be used overland as they are so light and easy to shoot, ideal Rabbit rifles although I suspect there would not be a whole load left for the pot.
