Interesting stuff.
Surely though I can give a gun to my RFD, then it's his. He can give it to another RFD. They can then give it to the buyer?
Same process, I don't really understand how they can legally challenge this, I'll call my dept and ask them to clarify. Thanks all!

An RFD mate says that he can hold a rifle in two ways, on his stock list, which he can't legally use, and his FAC.
As an RFD, he can take possession of a gun (new or s/h) for another FAC holder (ie pending variation), by checking the sellers authority to possess/serial no. etc, entering it on his stock list, and when the slot arrives, handing it over, entering it on the holders FAC, and informing his own FAO within 7 days.
A local gunshop confirms this.

It is not so according to the law.

The nub of the issue seems to relate to the seller, if the buyer has no slot on his/her FAC for the gun then the seller cannot sell it to them 'till such time as they have a slot, that is why the seller has to see the buyers FAC to see that they have appropriate permissions and the details enter the details onto the buyers FAC. The transfer of the firearm then goes through the RFDs registers as normal only the receiving RFD doesn't enter the firearm on the buyers FAC as the seller has already done so but this gives the buyer the authority to receive the firearm from the receiving RFD.
Basically if you do not have permission to have the firearm then you cannot buy it and a seller is breaking the law if they give you title to the firearm without you having authority to acquire.
This has been hashed over in the previous thread and regardless of individual opinions on the matter this is how the sector is currently expected to operate, at least my licensing authority think so and so does the GTA and BASC and unless there is some uniformity across the country on this then some of us will be undoubtedly doing it wrong.

Hang on... I thought just having a slot was permission to the fac holder to aquire a firearm. The seller/rfd fill in the fac to make note of the transfer , not to authorise it.

The slot needs to be particular to the acquisition, if you want to buy a 303 but only have a free 22 slot then you have no authority to acquire the 303 till the variation for a 303 comes through and the seller of the 303 cannot sell it to you till that happens.

Having a suitable slot allows you to purchase a firearm of that caliber but if you buy the firearm the seller has to enter the details of the sale onto your certificate. Very difficult if you live at opposite ends of the Country.
Sort of limits the area I have to acquire a P14 for instance I need to find one within sensible traveling distance.

But,
The current owner of the firearm transfers it to an rfd who transfers it to another rfd who transfers it to the new owner.
As the notes in the fac say that anyone transfering a firearm must write the details in the fac. The final rfd is transfering the firearm to the new owner, so therefore they should enter their details on the new owners fac.
Dromia , you mentioned in your post that the RFD cannot transfer the firearm to the new owner unless authorised by the original owner filling in the fac.
